Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral Home - Springfield from Jan. 28 to Jan. 29, 2026.
Ann Terese Jacques (nee Butler), age 97, passed away surrounded by her loving family on January 27, 2026. She was born in Elizabeth and later raised in Union before settling in
Springfield, NJ for more than 70 years. She lovingly and selflessly raised six children. Ann was very involved at St. James Church, where she served as a kindergarten aide, no doubt impacting the lives of countless children through her motherly instincts and devotion. Ann also volunteered for more than 50 years at Overlook Hospital, a service that allowed her to joyously escort many of her newborn grandchildren out to meet their first ray of sunshine next to their proud and beaming Gram.
Ann could most often be seen walking around town to run errands or hopping on the #70 bus to her volunteer work. Ann enjoyed trips down to the boardwalk for a day of bench sitting, viewing the ocean waves pound the shoreline and people watching, preferably followed by a window table at the Shrimp Box for a late lunch. Drives to her favorite local parks, especially to view the cherry blossoms, brought her joy. If she was with family, she was happy. For Ann, it was as simple as that, most importantly just being Mom, Gram, and G-G.
Ann never sought attention for all of the gracious and generous deeds and countless acts of sincere kindness, most often done in anonymity, she bestowed upon persons known and unknown to her. These qualities and attributes served as Ann's core foundation and will forever represent her legacy. Ann was very loved as the matriarch of her family with a great sense of humor and strong commitment to her large family. Her simple wish was for family togetherness, a wish that will undoubtedly be honored in her memory because she instilled in all who knew her a true sense of caring.
Ann is predeceased by her husband of 56 years Charles Jacques; her daughter Joan Wnek; her sister Genevieve Butler; and her brother Joseph Butler. She is survived by her children Marion Kaplan (husband Morrie); Thomas Jacques; Peter Jacques (wife Donna); Diane Scheuerman; and Karen Jacques. She treasured watching her grandchildren grow into adults – Sarah Elliott (husband Ben); Laura Scheuerman; Robert Scheuerman; Rachel Kaplan; Christopher Jacques (wife Christine); Elizabeth Jacques, and Adam Jacques (wife Claudia). Ann also proudly and joyously bore witness to the growth and achievements of her great-grandchildren Ethan & Noah Caffrey; Millie Elliott; Charlie Jacques; and, Amado, Drago and Nalu Jacques. Her seat at the table will be greatly missed in their lives but her unconditional love for them will guide them forever.
