Obituary published on Legacy.com by Albert P O'Donnell Funeral Home from Oct. 4 to Oct. 5, 2025.
Ann Keon Mackrell, 83, of
Scranton, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 2, 2025. Born on July 25, 1942, Ann grew up in Quyon, Quebec, Canada. Ann graduated from Notre Dame Convent High School in Ottawa in 1960 and earned a degree in Nursing Science from the University of Ottawa in 1964.
It was at the University of Ottawa where Ann met the love of her life, Jim Mackrell. Ann and Jim were married on September 3, 1966 and celebrated 40 years of marriage on September 3, 2006, five days before Jim's passing. After starting their family in 1968 and living in New York, NY, Langley, VA and Moscow, PA, Ann and Jim settled in Green Ridge in 1977 to raise their family.
A stay-at-home mother, Ann poured her love, energy and patience into raising her five children: Peter, Katherine, John, Paul and Kristen. Ann's home was a place of warmth and welcome, filled with kindness, compassion and the steady presence of a woman whose greatest joy came from caring for those around her. Upon becoming a grandmother in 2002, Ann shared the same boundless love with her fourteen grandchildren. Known to her grandchildren for her warmth, love and encouragement, Ann delighted in attending their milestones, celebrating their accomplishments and always providing them with her unconditional love. Ann will be dearly missed by her children and grandchildren and will always remain an inspiration to her family.
Though Ann's home became Scranton, Ann was a fierce and loyal member of the Keon family and her Canadian roots were always close to her heart. Whether she was "up in Canada" visiting her siblings, Min, Regina, Des, Joey, John and her extended family, or hosting her siblings and nieces and nephews "down in the States", Ann cherished her time with her Canadian family. Ann and her twin sister, Min, shared a special bond like no other. No distance could keep the twins apart.
Beyond her devotion to her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family, Ann was known for her generous spirit and a heart that never stopped giving. She dedicated countless hours to service in her community and church, serving on numerous boards and committeesand leading fundraisers and charitable events for her community. She was always willing to lend a hand, provide comfort or a listening ear or perform quiet acts of compassion wherever there was a need. Ann left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. Ann was the epitome of a social butterfly. With her vibrant smile, cheerful disposition, stunning white hair and stylish wardrobe, Ann could strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone she met. She loved connecting with people everywhere she went or even from her own home. Ann could frequently be found chatting on the phone in her kitchen and more than once, boasted how she uncovered a connection with someone calling her house with the wrong number.
Ann is survived by her children, Peter J. Mackrell, M.D., Baltimore, MD; Katherine Mackrell Oven and husband, Paul T. Oven, Esq.,
Dunmore, PA; John P. Mackrell, M.D., Olney, MD; Paul J. Mackrell and wife, Lisa Mackrell,
