Ann Mottley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dery Funeral Home on Jul. 3, 2025.
Ann Theresa Mottley (Claffie), 69, passed away at Berkshire Medical Center on May 31, 2025 after a brief battle with Pneumonia. Born in Pittsfield, MA on April 24, 1956 to the late Richard F. Claffie and Carolyn E. Claffie (Holden), Ann grew up in Dalton, MA where she attended Saint Agnes Academy and Wahconah Regional High School. She graduated from Our Lady of Elms College where she majored in Spanish. Ann had a rewarding career as a Travel Agent and a local tour guide for Dalton Travel Agency, Tour Co. on Cape Cod, and Berkshire Visitors Bureau. She ran Gosnold's Village Resort on Cape Cod for several years before returning to the Berkshires. After obtaining her Pilot's license, Ann became a proud member of the Civil Air Patrol, helping to provide aide and rescue services to those who needed it. In 2024 she stepped away from work due to health concerns. Ann is predeceased by her husband, Harry E. Mottley, parents Richard and Carolyn Claffie, and her brother, David R. Claffie. She is also predeceased by her dear friend, Louise Filkins. She will be deeply missed by her friend and sister, Jane R. Strong, her nephew, William R. Strong and niece Erin E. Strong, her brother Stephen G. Claffie and his wife Della Claffie, her sister in-law, Beth Claffie and nephew Drew Claffie, her sister Mary Secor and husband Daniel Secor, and her nephew Tyler Claffie. She also leaves behind her son Robert Mottley and his family. To those who knew Ann best, she was a woman of faith and strong morals who did her best to help those in need. As a member of the United Methodist Church in Pittsfield, she was instrumental in establishing their multi-room shelter, contributed weekly to their food pantry, and provided Spanish translation services to parishioners. In addition to her local philanthropic initiates, Ann donated monthly to over 20 organizations including the St. Joseph's Indian School, Wounded Warrior Project, The American National Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders USA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and then National Organization for Women, just to name a few. For several years she was an active member of Dining for Women, where she helped raise necessary fund for girls and women living in poverty around the world. Every year, Ann sponsored a young girl from St. Joseph's Indian School in her college endeavors. Ann's heart rested with her family, especially her sister Jane and niece Erin, with which she shared a special bond. From their annual "Girls trips" to Cape Cod, Rhode Island, Olde Sturbridge Village and countless local attractions, to Saturday night Hallmark movies and Cribbage games. Ann enjoyed spiritual retreats, whether alone, or with her sister in-law Beth. She treasured the times spent with family. Over the years, Ann developed wonderful life-long friendships. She will be remembered fondly by sisters Judy and Mimi Hall, Pauline Almer, Maryanne Rodriguez, MaryJane Sacket, Jan Harris, Alan Honig, and her college friend Celeste Trifero with whom she studied abroad with for a year in Spain. Ann's family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Mount Carmel Care Center and Berkshire Medical Center who provided top-notch care, support, and a gentleness to which they treated her over the last few months. Their efforts to care for Ann did not go unnoticed.
