Serian, Ann
ALBANY - Ann Serian, 97, passed away peacefully from pneumonia with family by her side on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Albany Medical Center on the Comfort Care floor. She was born to Charles and Mary Tutunjian on March 16, 1928, in Troy, N.Y. She brought fun and laughter to all that knew her. Life of the party, beautiful, always well dressed and bejeweled are just a few adjectives to describe her. She loved to be surrounded by people and was a great entertainer. Her home parties were always accompanied by Armenian food, music and dancing.
She began her long career in sales at Denby's Department store in downtown Troy. From there, she opened Ann's Dress Shop in the basement of her home. She was an expert seamstress and spent many long nights altering clothes to make life easier for her family. When she closed her shop, she was hired by Cohoes Manufacturers where she was known for her exceptional taste and very honest feedback. After her many years at Cohoes, she worked several other sales jobs including those at Evoke in Styvestant Plaza and Rumors Hair Salon in Latham. Her sales pitch at Rumors was "You look good, but you could look better!" She loved the girls who worked there and the gossip. Her favorite job, however, was at Northeastern Fine Jewelry in Guilderland. She LOVED jewelry which was evident from the bracelets she wore on both wrists up to her elbows and the statement necklaces which earned her the nickname Mrs. T.
She and her loving husband Alfred were married for 48 years before he passed on December 9, 1999. He proposed to her only three months after they met, and they were married on her birthday. She and Al were blessed with many long time friends. Esther Massry was her best friend for over 50 years. They played cards, lunched and got lost many times driving together. Her best friend later in life was Teri Devine, her next door neighbor. They played cards or Rummikub almost nightly, decorated their homes together, and went out for soft ice cream regularly. Teri was always there to help care for her, for which her family is very grateful.
Ann's children were her life. She would say "If something happened to one of you, I would sling myself from wall to wall!" Her greatest joy was when they all were doing well and getting along. She was also blessed with her son-in-law, Bob Ungerer. He treated her like a queen which had her constantly saying "Is this living or what?!"
The last 30 years or so, she spent her winters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she made many, many close friends. She loved going to the flea market, playing mah-jong, socializing at the pool and going to special events like Diva Night with her friends.
She is survived by her children, Richard Serian, MaryAnn Serian, Susan Ungerer (Robert); and her grandchildren, Zachary Cohen and Remy Ungerer. She was so proud of them and loved them to no end. She was especially close to her niece, Dina Carrol, who visited her regularly, and also survived by many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Ed Tutunjian (Adrina) (who was a lot of fun too ); and several brother and sister in-laws.
The family is so grateful to Melody Smith and Huda Sami for the exceptional care and compassion they showed our mom at her home.
