I was fortunate to have Mrs. Fender for biology my freshman year ('63-'64) and chemistry my sophomore year ('64-'65) at Willard High School. She left Willard to finish her teaching career in Springfield. I visited with her in 2009 several times at the Willard Care Center: her mind was still sharp; her private room was filled with books and memorabilia; she took her meals in her room; and as in high school with each visit she still called me Mike (my older brother who also had her as a teacher).
