Ms. Anna Flatley

Anna Buchko Flatley, 96, of Columbia, MD, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2011. She was born in Notomine, on September 23, 1915 to Charles and Mary Buchko of Comfort. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Felix Buchko of Comfort, sisters, Julia Stanley and Virginia B. Mays of Charleston, and husbands, Pierre Dolan and John W. Flatley, of Maryland. Anna grew up on Cabin Creek and graduated from East Bank High School and received her MBA from John Hopkins University. She took her nurses training at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD supervising the operating room and GYN/OB. After her retirement, she worked as a school nurse for several years for Howard County Schools in the Baltimore area. Anna was a member of St. Marks Catholic Church, Fallston, MD; Polish Heritage and volunteered at Baltimore's Arts and Science Museum. Anna was responsible for starting John Hopkins School of Nursing Scholarship Fund with her graduating class of 1940 to assist student nurses by helping with their tuition at Hopkins. Anna is survived by her caregiver and sister, Mary B. Goodwin, of Charleston, sister-in-law, Margaret Buchko, of Comfort, special niece, Hope Stanley, of Belle, seven step-children, 21 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, five nieces and a nephew. Special thanks go to the skilled nursing staff at Vantage House in Columbia, MD and to Dr. Kenneth Geh, Beulah Newby, Chris Newport and Allyson Stanton for their professional and compassionate care of Anna. In keeping with Anna's wishes there was no visitation and a private service was conducted by Father Patrick McDonough. Interment followed in Amick Cemtery, Comfort.
