Obituary published on Legacy.com by Whiting's Funeral Home - Williamsburg on Jul. 20, 2023.
I have fought a good fight. I have finished the race.
I have kept the faith.
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness.
II Timothy 4:7-8
Anna Roberta Cowles Jones answered the Master's call in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 16, 2023. She was born on June 4, 1942, to the late Cornelious Columbus Cowles and Ruth Redell Moore Cowles.
As a young child, she confessed Christ as her personal Savior, was baptized, and joined Zion Baptist Church in Lightfoot, Virginia. She joyfully sang in the senior choir and served as an usher, and was an active and faithful member until dementia prevented her from participating. She earned her GED from the Williamsburg-James City Public School System. On June 22, 1957, she married Fred Douglas Jones. This union was blessed with three children. They enjoyed twenty-four years of marital bliss until his passing on March 19, 1981.
"Berta," as she was affectionately called, was a hard worker and was never afraid of work. In order to provide for herself and her family, she worked all her life. She worked a number of years at The Williamsburg Pottery Factory and Farm Fresh, and until three years ago, she worked for several private families as a housekeeper. Berta loved her family and was a loving, kind, and dedicated mother and grandmother. She adored and spoiled her great-grandchildren, who called her "Grandma Grandma," because they could not understand how she could be both their grandmother and also their parent's grandmother. She will be sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Leon Cowles, Melvin Jenkins, Gene Cowles, and Earnest Cowles; and great-grandson, Corey.
She leaves to mourn her loss, three children, Deborah Jones Opie, Fred Douglas Jones Jr., and Sophina Jones; two stepsons, Lawrence Frazier and Nathan Jones; two sons-in-law, Thaddeus Opie and Chester Calica; daughter-in-law, Casey Jones; eight grandchildren, Syreeta Manning, Shauntee Manning, Cameron Jones, Kaytriece Jones Spencer, Fredricia Tabb, Brittany Jones, Julian Jones, and Austee Jones; three step-grandchildren, Rasheem, Shawn, and Shequan; eleven great-grandchildren, Ali, Romello, Dorian, Cordell, Connor, Kali, Kesari, Maya, Nina, Jayden, and Tyson; four sisters-in-law, Rosa Jones Jimmerson, Viola Jones Wise, Marie Jones Taylor, and Yvonne Grain Cowles; brother-in-law, Horace Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends who we call family.
You left a beautiful memory
A sorrow too great to be told
But to us who loved and lost you
Your memory will never grow old.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Zion Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Jones may be viewed on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of her service.
