I post this tribute to Dr. Clauss, who stands out among my many teachers. She opened my mind and helped me discover my love of poetry. She made me a better writer and to appreciate brevity. She was kind. Her classroom was safe. I remember her often when I write. I thank her for Equus, and for so many other lessons.

I remember Ann as the quintessential teacher for the Junior Poetry paper. This paper, 3,000 words about one poem, was a daunting ordeal and loomed over the first half of Junior year English. Ann broke the paper down into pieces, imagery, rhyme scheme, scansion, voice, point of view overarching idea, and so on. She taught her students what each piece consisted of, what it meant, how it applied to the poem each one had chosen. They wrote their papers section by section and then rewrote a final paper with the sections all assembled. She took the onus out of the a paper and divided it into manageable pieces. Nobody panicked, including less able English students. All students achieved success if they were lucky enough to be in her class.

Anne was a special person. Her intellect and natural curiosity made her a fun person to be around. She was loved and respected by her students, friends and family. She treated people with such kindness and good cheer. She will be missed by all who knew her. Go in Peace Aunt Anne.

Anne was a spirited intellect and friend--dedicated to both her students and her colleagues. She loved to argue, and to laugh. I will always remember, with a smile, the hours I spent on the quarry, throwing flies to rising fish, while Anne encouraged both me and the fish from shore to "get to know each other."

We remember those who gave their lives to loving, guiding, and serving young people with the greatest respect. Nichols School is fortunate to know so many great champions of kids, and we remember Anne and think of her family during this time. Bill Clough

Anne shared her unique humor, academic intensity and a love of teaching with all of us at Nichols. I am thankful for the insights she shared with me when I first started teaching in the Upper School.
