Anne Clifton Smithson joined the Lord and her family in her heavenly home on August 29, 2025, at the age of 98. She passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones in Cazenovia, New York.
Anne was born on December 15, 1926 in Mullens, West Virginia to Lottie and Pierce Clifton. She was the second oldest of seven children and the last surviving member of the family. For much of her life Anne lived and worked in Roanoke, Virginia. In 1953 she married Fred Smithson, and they moved to Richmond, Virginia where they had two daughters, Dawn Elizabeth and Rebecca Ann. Anne was a devoted wife, loving mother, and generous neighbor. She loved painting, gardening, sewing, and bird watching.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Smithson; parents, Volney Pierce Clifton and Lottie Lowry Clifton; sisters, Margaret Steber, Ruby Clifton, and Eva Clifton; and brothers, Roy, David and Clifton.
She is survived by daughters, Dawn Smithson Deale (Melvin) and Rebecca Smithson Basla (Michael); and grandchildren, Brianna and Laura Deale.. Special thanks to her loving care givers who became part of our family.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm followed by a service at 2:00 pm on September 12th at Oakley's North Chapel, 6732 Peters Creek Rd., Roanoke, VA 24019.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool, NY 13088, The Rescue Mission of Roanoke, P.O. Box 11525, Roanoke, VA 24022, or Angels of Assisi, 415 Campbell Ave., Roanoke, VA 24016
