Anne Eileen West, 90, formerly of Pittsfield, died Sunday, November 30, 2025, at St. Joseph's Residence in Enfield, Conn., where she had resided since December 2022.
Born in Belchertown, Mass., on July 15, 1935, a daughter of Romeo and Blanche Giles Joyal, she was educated in Belchertown schools and was a graduate of Belchertown High School.
Mrs. West worked in the school systems of Richmond and Pittsfield in the cafeteria as a "lunch lady", serving both lunches and smiles to all the kids. She was a long-time cashier and office clerk, first at A&P Supermarket and later, in her "retirement years", at the former Harry's Supermarket in Pittsfield.
Mrs. West was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and was a member of the Rosary Solidarity.
She enjoyed gardening, bowling and visiting with friends and family. Every summer she looked forward to attending multiple performances at Mac Hayden Theater in Canaan, NY with "the gang" as she called the group of 12 that all went together, which included her close friends, George & Pam Breen. Along with the theater, Anne absolutely loved her yearly trips to Las Vegas with George.
Her husband, William J. West, whom she married on October 20, 1972, died February 14, 2001.
Mrs. West is survived by her five children: Michael (and Danette) Sapowsky of Medford, N.J., Brenda Sapowsky of St. Petersburg, Fla; Larry Sapkowsky (and Laurie) of Chicopee, MA; Adam Sapkowsky (and Oe) of Sacramento, Calif., and Anne Palmer (and Lynn Bray) of East Windsor, Conn.; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; as well as three sisters, Louise Barrett, Eleanor Plant, Lorena Belheumer, and two brothers, Samuel Joyal and Robert Joyal.
Besides her beloved husband of 28 years, she was pre-deceased by her siblings, Marjorie Joyal, James Joyal, Bernard Joyal, Walter Joyal and her grandson, Brett Sapowsky.
The family would like to express our gratitude to all the Sisters and Staff at St Joe's Residence for their caring, compassion and love they showed Anne and the family. We could not have asked for a better place or people to join her on this final journey of her life. We are forever grateful.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Anne E. West will be held Monday, December 8, 2025 starting at 8:45 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church celebrated by Rev. Steven G. Montesanti, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Sunday, December 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to the Berkshire Humane Society and mailed to Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, 01201.
