Annie Elizabeth Hayes was born on June 28, 1942 to the late Robert Lee and Virginia Bell Steele in Conway, South Carolina.
Annie was educated in the Newark school system and attended South Side High School. She was a hard and dedicated worker for the Newark School system at Charlton Street School and later retired from Louise A. Spencer after 31 years of service.
Annie remained united in holy matrimony to Ernest Samuel Hayes Sr. for 59 years until his death. Unto this union were three children Richard Lamont, Ernest Samuel Jr. and Deborah Ann where they resided in Newark and East Orange New Jersey.
Annie was well known for her many acts of kindness. She often filled the shoes of mother to all she encountered. She enjoyed giving to others and making sure that everyone around her was ok. In the 1980s and 1990s she was one of the county committee members in East Orange and also enjoyed working the voting polls every year until she became ill. One of her favorites was going to the East Orange Senior Center faithfully and being a member of the Exercise Team and a Silver Stepper. Also while attending the center Annie had received a few certificates of awards for her dedication. She also liked going bowling and traveling with her friends. Her smile, warm voice, sweet spirit and wonderful personality could easily light up any room.
Annie peacefully entered her Heavenly Resting Place on Monday June 3, 2024, in the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, New Jersey. She was preceded in death by her sister Virginia "Bunny" Steele Jones.
Annie's legacy of life will live on through her living children, Lamont, Ernest Jr. (Cheryl) and Deborah; seven grandchildren and seven great -grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her precious memories one brother Robert Steele and two sisters Bessie Johnson, Delores Ruffin and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
Annie will truly be missed by many people but she will always be smiley and watching over all her family and friends.
