Antero Tavares "Andy" Centeio

February 5, 1937 - September 22, 2025

Antero Tavares Centeio, affectionately known as "Andy," peacefully passed away at Portland Care and Rehabilitation Center in Portland, Connecticut. Born on February 5, 1937, in Brava, Cabo Verde, he was the son of the late Eugenia Chavier and José Centeio. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte (Rocha) Centeio, and three sisters: Carlotta Gonsalves, Ida Chavier, and Lydia Centeio.

After spending many of his adolescent years in Senegal, Antero naturalized to the United States of America, specifically the district of Rhode Island, in the summer of 1968. He was a self learner who became a bit of a handyman. He was very meticulous and loved tinkering. His diverse skill set included being a Merchant Seaman, a construction laborer, a truck driver, and a true perfectionist. He loved helping people, sometimes to a fault. His passions were varied. He loved music and dancing and occasionally played the accordion which he taught himself. He enjoyed riding his vintage Vespa, playing pool, and collecting magic tricks. The most fulfilling aspects of his life revolved around discovering unique trinkets, fishing, mysticism and indulging in an occasional cold beer. He dreamed of traveling and one day owning a boat and sailing back to the old country.

Antero is survived by his four sons: Axel (Desirée), Andre (Lisa), Christopher Cardente, born as Clovis Centeio (Theresa), and Michael Cardente, born as Ziplen Centeio. He also leaves behind two granddaughters, Eliana and Evana Centeio, and three grandsons; Julian, Tavares, and Micah Centeio. Antero's legacy is cherished by a wide circle of family members, extended family and friends.

Antero's remains have been entrusted to Abbey Funeral and Cremation Center, where he will be cremated. A private family gathering will be held for his immediate family members. The Centeio family extends our deepest gratitude to Portland Care and Rehabilitation Center for providing him with exceptional care and service over the past 12 years.
