Anthony "Tony" Parla, a revered family man, esteemed attorney, and a craftsman with a heart as warm as the wooden birdhouses he lovingly created, passed away on June 4, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on November 13, 1951, in Chicago, Tony's life was a tapestry of dedication, intelligence, and kindness, woven with the love of his family, the respect of his peers, and the joy of his hobbies.
Tony's early years in Chicago laid a strong foundation for a life characterized by hard work and academic achievement. His educational journey was marked by a series of accomplishments; he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Northeastern Illinois University, an MBA from Suffield University, and a Juris Doctor from Canterbury University. This impressive educational pedigree propelled Tony into a fulfilling career as an attorney in the insurance field, where he was known for his thoughtful and intelligent approach to even the most complex of cases.
Those who worked with Tony knew him as a friendly colleague who brought a sense of camaraderie to the workplace. His professional life was marked by integrity and a tireless commitment to justice. Tony's involvement in various associations within his field highlighted his dedication to his profession and his desire to impart his knowledge to others.
Outside of his professional life, Tony was a man of many interests. His exceptional talent as a woodworker was evident in the intricate birdhouses that dotted his family's garden and the local community, providing shelter for countless birds over the years. Tony was also an avid golfer, a passion he pursued with the same focus and determination that he applied to his career. However, his greatest joy was found in the time spent with his beloved children and grandchildren, whose lives were deeply enriched by his presence.
Tony is survived by his loving wife, Mary Sue (nee Montavon), his cherished daughter Tracy Schultz and son-in-law Jason Schultz, his devoted son Nick, and his adored grandchildren Hunter, Autumn, and Austin Schultz. He also leaves behind his brother Sam (Savario) Parla, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins. Tony's life was previously touched by the loss of his first wife Nancy, his parents Carl and Anna Parla, and his sister MaryAnn DeMichel.
Those who knew Tony will remember him as a man who embodied the qualities of thoughtfulness, intelligence, and friendliness. He was a beacon of light in the lives of his family and friends, and his legacy will continue to shine through the lives of those he touched.
Tony's journey came to a peaceful close in Wheaton, where he was surrounded by the love of his family. His battle with cancer was fought with the same grace and courage that defined his life. Tony will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but the memory of his warm smile, his gentle spirit, and his unwavering kindness will remain forever in their hearts.
As we say goodbye to Anthony "Tony" Parla, we celebrate a life beautifully lived-a life filled with purpose, generosity, and an abundance of love. He has left an indelible mark on this world, and though he may be gone, his spirit will continue to inspire those he has left behind. Rest in peace, Tony, and thank you for everything.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2024 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois. Donations are being accepted to the AGH TDS Lyons Memorial Fund through UChicago Medicine AdventHealth to support the work of GlenOaks School.
