Anthony Stephen Raimo Md

Anthony S. Raimo, M.D., age 97 of Oakland, died peacefully after a short illness on Monday, January 3, 2022. Born in 1924 in Flushing, New York, son of Aida and Stephen Raimo. Brother to Dorothy Pace (nee Raimo), who predeceased him. Devoted husband to Mary Ann (nee Potts) and beloved father to Linda Kelly of Wilbraham MA., Diane McManus of Easton, PA., and Stephen Raimo of Wyckoff, NJ and their spouses; proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
After graduating from Georgetown Medical School in 1948, Dr. Raimo served as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy in Cherry Point, North Carolina, where he was tasked with managing expansion plans for the Naval Hospital at Camp LeJeune. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1954 he joined the medical staff of Valley Hospital, opening his first private pediatric practice in Ridgewood, NJ and then later in Wyckoff, NJ, where his practice would grow to over 8000 patients. Over the course of his 19 years as a pediatrician at Valley he was elected Secretary Treasurer in 1963, Vice President in 1964, and President of the Medical Staff in 1965. He retired from private practice in 1972 following an injury to his hand and in 1976 joined the Valley Hospital administration, serving in a role that was essentially the first Chief Medical Officer position at the hospital – Coordinator of Medical Affairs and Education. Over the next 16 years in this position, he wrote Valley Hospital's first Quality Assurance Plan, helped establish the medical library, and developed the Tel Med Patient Education Program with the Auxiliary. He retired from the Valley Hospital administration in 1991, becoming a member of its Emeritus Staff in 1992.
Dr. Raimo was also an avid gardener and prolific painter who, in retirement, ran the Oakland Azalea Farm and whose oil paintings were regularly featured in Kurth Cottage art shows in support of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary and at the Ridgewood Art Institute. He proudly received the Hudson Valley Art Association Award at the Ridgewood Art Institute's 19th regional open jury show. In recent years up until the start of the pandemic, Dr. Raimo could be seen in the hallways of Valley Hospital as a Roman Catholic Eucharistic Minister as a member of the Pastoral Care Department.
