In memory of a cousin I never met but grew to know through his art. All whose roots reside in Marjayoun will never be able to repay the debt of bringing us along on his journey home. Prayers are owed for eternity for Anthony and his children. May God bless all he touched and those who will be touched by his words in perpetuity.

To the Wonderful Shadid Family:
The World has lost a great human being and the great Anthony Shadid is irreplaceable. There will never be another Anthony Shadid! I admired Anthony's work in journalism and his integrity was of the highest repute. I read his book "House of Stone" and Anthony took me on an escapade to the Middle East, a place I knew nothing about! There he taught me how to appreciate my family roots. And I also met all his friends, family members, neigbors, business people, and every conceivable person who worked on reconstructing the House of Stone. I cried for you Anthony even though we have never met. My heart goes out to the Shadid family and we all know that TONY is in a safe place. Walk Good dear Tony may the stars and the sun shine sweetly on your handsome face.

My heart hurts for you Nada. I just saw you on television. What an incredible legacy he has left but I know that may be little comfort, Our son died this past June. He was 27. We were so close. When you said you would have a hard time doing the things you did together, I can only tell you that the deeper your grief, the deeper your love for he who has passed. Rest in peace Shadid. To our Dear Friend Buddy & Family.
I am so very touched by Tony's passing. We enjoyed each others emails over the years. What a treasure trove of information. We spoke of our G-Fathers homes in Marjayoun. He was so very kind to answer my first email several years ago. I will miss him & Know God Will be with him always.

You may know I have been corresponding with Tony for several years. I was proud to send him the work I have done on our Tribal Family. He wrote that he enjoyed it very much.

Dear Nada and family - so many tributes and stories about Anthony. In 2006,I sent Anthony an email expressing my admiration and appreciation for his brilliant writings. Of course, he replied and continued to reply to my emails over the years. Not once did he fail to send me an email thanking me for my support. My Father was born in Marjeyoun and Anthony always connected with people from Marjeyoun.
His humility captured the hearts of the people in Lebanon, Egypt, and Iraq. When I met him, his humility was evident immediately in our conversation. When his son was born, I sent something to him and Nada in Cambridge. I saved the beautiful card and eloquent comments he sent to me. His legacy is a proud one for all of us especially to his family....Affectionately - Nadia Abou Samra Benab

"God employs several translators; some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness, some by war, some by justice; but God's hand is in every translation, and his hand shall bind up all our scattered leaves again for that library where every book shall lie open to one another. " John Donne

Your son translated the stories, the miseries and the truths of war and turmoil in the middle east. Our family deeply admires him and has only prayers and the deepest respect for his family.

When I opened up my facebook page, that was the first thing I saw posted by our cousin in Oklahoma City, Brenda Shadid Wilson. I was shocked. Even though I had never met Anthony, I followed a lot of his sories about the Middle East. My heart is broken for the family of this daring young man. He is a great loss to the Shadid families all across the world. To his immediate family I wish to express my sincere condolences. I know he was loved and honored by masses of people who followed his writings and reporting. May he rest in peace now that his journey is over.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To The Shadid Family
With deep sympathy and a heavy heart ,I write these words for your family. I am so sorry for your loss. May you find peace in all the pleasant memories that you have, and may they comfort you, and bring you strength, in your time of grief. May you also find comfort with the thoughts below:
Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.
This verse found @ Isaiah 49:13 has comforted me, I hope that t comforts you as well.

I was a fraternity pledge brother of Anthony's at OU. He stood next to me at our "line-ups" and we shared a lot of challenging times and fun times together as we became members of the fraternity. Anthony was such a force of nature - funny, so damn smart and passionate. We were so sad to see him leave for Wisconsin but knew it was best for him personally and academically. This is such a senseless death and for someone so important to the understanding of what is happening in the middle east. Rest well Anthony, we will miss you.
