Archie Delbert Pyburn was born November 11, 1919 in Prairie Hill, TX and died on February 11, 2010 in San Antonio, TX. Archie lived and worked on the family farm in Prairie Hill, TX before beginning his career in insurance. He volunteered for military service in October 1941, reaching the rank of Sergeant Major while serving with the 903rd and 904th Army Air Corp, Engineer Corp Headquarters Company in the European Theater. He received numerous commendations, including a Bronze Star for service in Italy. After he was discharged from the military, he had a long career with John Hancock Insurance, eventually moving from Texas to New Jersey. After retiring from John Hancock, Archie started his second career as the head carpenter at the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ and was an active member of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees Local M536. Archie was active in VFW Post 4303 in West Keansburg, NJ, serving as commander, treasurer and various other leadership positions. After retiring from his second career, Archie brightened the neighborhood in west Keansburg, NJ with his extensive flower garden and his helpful spirit. Archie is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lillian Zapor Pyburn; his three sons and their wives Richard and Mary Pyburn of San Antonio, TX, Robert and Paula Pyburn of Union Beach, NJ, and Stuart and Shelly Pyburn of Pipe Creek, TX; grandchildren, Ariana Pyburn of San Marcos, TX, Andrew Pyburn of San Antonio, TX, Robert Pyburn Jr. and his wife Carol of Jackson, MJ and Travis Pyburn of Union Beach, NJ, and one great grandchild, Zoey Pyburn of Jackson, NJ; sisters, Maxine Tucker and her husband, Tommy of Mathis, TX, Sally Spence and her husband Clayton of North Richland Hills, TX; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Archie was preceded in death by his parents Edward J. 'Ned' Pyburn and Lena Roberts Pyburn; his brother Leslie Pyburn, and sisters Mary Louise Pyburn Rush and Virginia Mae Pyburn Rippstein. Archies family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at The Lodge at Leon Springs and Kindred Hospital for their work in making Archie's last days as comfortable as possible. SERVICES Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 PM in the Fred J. Tips Mausoleum Chapel at Mission Burial Park North immediately followed by a graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice in his memory.
