Arla Elverud, 82, died peacefully on February 26, 2022, in her rural Cornelius, Oregon home.
Arla was born October 28 in Chester, South Dakota. She was the youngest of five children born to William and Anna Schoenefeld. She attended Elkton and Revillo High Schools and graduated in the class of 1957. She attended business school in Chicago.
Arla was married to Richard M. Elverud November 3, 1957, in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, in Wentworth, South Dakota. The newlyweds lived in Hendricks, Minnesota. After the birth of their first daughter, Marya, the couple moved to Cornelius, Oregon where they were members of Zion Lutheran Church. They had two more children, daughter Diane and son Rick. They bought their first home from a neighbor, and later replaced the late 1880's farmhouse with their current residence. They were youth group leaders and Arla taught Sunday School and vacation bible school. She was active in Ladies Aid Society and woman's bible study.
Later the Elveruds attended Evergreen Christian Center where daughter Marya and granddaughter Amber were married. Arla was a member of the Germans from Russia organization, acting as secretary for several years.
Arla enjoyed decorating cakes and was admired for making beautiful wedding, anniversary and birthday cakes for friends and family. She enjoyed sewing, canning, scrapbooking and genealogy. She loved the beach and enjoyed travel.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Arla is survived by her husband Richard, her three children: Marya and Jim Sparks of Yamhill, Diane Overstreet of Hillsboro, and Rick Elverud of Aloha, eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be planned on a later date.
