Arlan was born on May 16, 1941 in Macungie, Pennsylvania, to Elton and Emma Snyder Gehman, where he spent his formative boyhood years in the rolling, lush land of his ancestors of Swiss Mennonite descent. His students included his son Adam Grosso.
