It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Arlene Gates Murray, who departed this world on May 2, 2025. Born on May 20, 1928, she was a cherished daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who touched the lives of all with her love, warmth, joy, generosity, and unwavering spirit.
Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Arlene was the daughter of the late Ethel and Carl Gates, Sr. of Summerdale and sister of her predeceased brothers Carl Jr. and Jack Gates. She met her husband, the late Richard (Dick) Murray Sr. while working at the Mechanicsburg Naval Depot. Dick was so much in love with her that he proposed 3 months after meeting her and they married seven months later, eventually celebrating 67 years of marriage. Dick and Arlene were deeply devoted to one another and their three children. They nurtured their children in an atmosphere of enduring love, laughter, and faith. Throughout her life, Arlene loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, always prioritizing her life around their needs and providing unwavering support.
Arlene was a 1947 Graduate of East Pennsboro High School. After graduating, she embarked on a successful career as a secretary, eventually retiring from the Senate of Pennsylvania. After retiring from the Senate, Arlene continued to work part-time and subsequently retired from Macy's Department Store.
Arlene is survived by her daughters, Eileen Bruner (Stephen) of Mechanicsburg, and Charlene Owen (Steven) of Duncannon, and her son, Richard Murray (Barbara) of Mechanicsburg. She also leaves behind 5 grandchildren Justin Bruner (Adrienne), Kristen Smeltz (Mark), Megan Wirrick (Christopher), Aaron Murray (Marissa) and Evan Murray (Kelly); 2 step-grandchildren, Chad Minnich and Heather Wickard; 11 great-grandchildren Morgan and McKenna Smeltz, Quinn, Ali and Hayley Keys and Rhys Wirrick, Brodie, Ryland, Brielle and Rowan Murray, and Aria Murray; and 8 step-great-grandchildren Emma, Charlotte, and Lincoln Wirrick, Jake, Logan and Kenadee Wickard, and Tyler and Chase Minnich.
Beyond her professional and family life, Arlene was an active member of the Camp Hill Church of God and past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star in New Bloomfield.
In her free time, Arlene enjoyed shopping with her friends and family, and spending time with her husband Dick going out to lunch with the Lunch Bunch, dancing, and attending plays at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse. In addition, Arlene and Dick actively participated in church as well as attended and organized weekly Bible Studies.
Arlene's legacy is one of love, kindness, and unwavering strength. She will be remembered for her heartfelt contributions to the lives of others, and her ability to bring joy and comfort to those around her. She most recently became known as the "Barbie" of Transitions Healthcare Allens Cove where she continually roamed the halls "assisting" residents, nurses, caregivers and dining room staff with her friendly presence and gentle touches of encouragement, spreading joy as she went while wearing her bright pink Barbie sneakers. As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the incredible life she led and the lasting impact she made.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Myers-Baker Funeral Home, 1903 Market Street,
Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 am with Services at 11. Friends and family are invited to attend and honor Arlene's memory, reflecting on the significant moments shared with her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Camp Hill Church of God, (123 North 21st
