Arnold Miller Obituary

BOONVILLE - Arnold J. Miller, 84, of East Road, and husband of Carol, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2024, at his residence, while surrounded by the loving care of his family and Hospice.

Affectionately known as "Arnie" he was born in Rome, on November 11, 1940, a son of Leo A. and Mary E. Mullroney Miller. Arnie graduated from Vernon Verona Sherrill High School, (V.V.S.), with the Class of 1959. Thereafter, he was employed, in Rome, for Revere Copper & Brass Co. and also for G.L.F., until 1963, when he began his service to our country in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Myers, VA, until his honorable discharge in 1965, during the Vietnam War.

On July 9, 1966, Arnie married the love of his life, Carol Schermerhorn, at St. Mary's Church, Copenhagen, NY. In 1973, Carol and Arnie moved to Boonville, where he was employed as the Store Manager for Boonville Agway, Farm Center, a large and comprehensive agricultural business, located on Park Avenue in Boonville. Over the years, Arnie became a renowned figure in the North Country dairy farm communities as a person who worked tirelessly to assist farmers, large and small in their daily agricultural and milk production endeavors. He was famous for his ability to quickly determine the quantity of fertilizer needed for a field or a correct mixture of feed for a dairy or other animals. He was a true master at "hands on" knowledge of the seed, fertilizer or feed business of farming. For many years, his wife, Carol, served as bookkeeper and clerk at the Boonville Agway Store and together they were a terrific working combination and will be fondly remembered for the quick wit and humor which they added to the local Agway Store operation. Arnie served as manager until the store closed in early fall of 2000. For several years thereafter, he was a part-time employee, working in the sand pit at Poland Sand and Gravel.

Mr. Miller was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Boonville, a life member of Boonville Council Knights of Columbus and a member of Charles J. Love American Legion Post 406, Boonville.

Arnie greatly enjoyed hunting and was a long-time member of Rome-New London Hunting Club – "Arnie's Army," at South Otselic, NY. He also greatly enjoyed gardening. Most of all, Arnie loved his wife, Carol and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Carol, he is survived by his children, sons, Michael P. Miller, Boonville and Mark D. Miller and his wife, Deana, Selkirk, NY; daughters, Mary E. Miller, Boonville and Michelle L. Miller, Boonville; eight grandchildren, Chad Miller and wife, Amy, Shannon Miller, Jamie and husband, Conner Rundle, Erik Miller, Jake and his wife, Julia, Joseph Miller, Claire and Carly Miller; four great-grandchildren, Vivianne Miller, Reid Miller, Cooper Miller and Sophie Rundle; at the present time, Arnie was eagerly anticipating the birth of a fifth great-grandchild. Also surviving is one brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Diane Miller, Blossvale, NY; a brother-in-law, Donald Vanvliet, Mason, OH; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arnie was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Mary; brothers, Bernard and David Miller; and a sister, Mildred Vanvliet.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Matthew Rawson, on Monday, January 6, 2025, at 1:00 PM, at St. Joseph's Church, Charles St., Boonville, with a spring interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Boonville. Calling hours are also on Monday from 9:00 AM until 12 Noon, at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St., Boonville.
