Arnold Rabinowitz died on Saturday November 18, 2023 at his home in Vero Beach, Florida. He was married to his beloved wife Ann Oberg Rabinowitz for 49 years. He also leaves his children, who he lovingly referred to as his favorite daughter and favorite son, Amy Huffman and Andrew Rabinowitz; his son-in-law Kevin Huffman and grandchildren, Asher and Everett Huffman; and his niece Jennifer Oberg.
The eldest son of Saul and Lillian Rabinowitz, Arnie was born in New Haven in 1938. He and his brother Robert grew up in Wallingford on Cedar Lane. After graduating from the University of Miami with a degree in accounting, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany. His eclectic work career included jobs at Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, Koenig Art Supply, Aerosonic and C/SCAN. He returned to Wallingford to raise his family and lived on North Elm Street, right at the edge of Choate campus for 36 years. On Friday nights you could find him by following the laughter to Michael's Trattoria or Main Street in the center of town.
Arnie had an exceptional heart. He suffered his first heart attack in 1980. His powerful will to live carried him through two more heart attacks, two bypasses and an implant. None of these deterred him from his love of tootsie rolls, chocolate glazed Dunkin Donuts and Laphroaig Scotch, contrary to all of his doctors' counsel.
Arnie loved reading the Economist, cheering for his beloved Boston Red Sox – a passion he passed on to his grandson – and watching the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team. He was inseparable from his wife, Ann, who he loved deeply despite his endless teasing. Arnie will be remembered fondly by his friends and family for his wry sense of humor, quiet generosity and total irreverence when faced with any hint of pretentiousness.
A private service will be held in Connecticut. Donations in his memory can be made to the VNA Hospice of Vero Beach, FL.
