Southbury-Arthur Frederick Apgar (Art) was born in Montclair, New Jersey, on October 20, 1939, to Arthur D. Apgar and Jenevieve (Clayton) Apgar. He was the youngest of their four children. After graduating high school, Art went to work at General Foods, Inc., in White Plains, New York, as a mail boy. There he met the love of his life, Ann Ehret, and they married in October of 1960. Daughter Elizabeth was born in 1963; son Arthur Jr was born 1965. Art attended Iona College and graduated with a B.S. cum laude in 1966. Art worked at numerous firms and finally partnered with his friend Edward W. Edwards, Jr., to form Movers Supply House, Inc., a Bronx firm supplying the moving and storage industry. While at MSH, Art became involved with the Bronx chapter of Lions International, and served on the board of the Bronx YMCA. In 1990, Art started a new business, Clayton's Mercantile Supply, with his wife Ann and their son Arthur Jr. After about 20 years at Clayton's Art embraced retirement going to the gym regularly, traveling, spending time writing and working on his various hobbies such as stamp, coin and post card collecting. Art also had a lifelong love of literature, including poetry. He published two books of poetry, The Knights of Malta, World Wars, A Great Plague, A Killer Shark in New Jersey And Other Heartwarming Tales (2011), and Dead But Not Forgotten: A History of War, Disease, and Other Calamities Related in Verse (2024). Art is survived by his wife Ann, their children Elizabeth (Salvatore) and Art Jr. (Jen), grandchildren Salvatore, Dominic, Carter, Reece, Camden and Macauley, as well as his sister Gail, and many nieces and nephews. He was recently predeceased by brother Richard, this past January. Family and friends may visit Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main Street South, Southbury, CT on Wednesday, August 14th, 2024 from 5-7 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 15th, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Carpino Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: The American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
