Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brighton Memorial Chapel, Inc. on Feb. 11, 2025.
With profound sadness, we announce the death of Arthur Comisar, long time resident of
Rochester, NY and recent resident of Palm Coast, FL.
Born in Rochester in 1937 to Russian immigrant parents, Benjamin and Clara Comisar (of blessed memory), Arthur grew up on Evergreen Street with his older brother, Paul (d. 2024).
He attended Benjamin Franklin High (class of 1955), where he was celebrated as an outstanding swimmer–breaking records in 50 yard dash events in Butterfly and Freestyle. He would later distinguish himself in Rochester as an award winning handball, racquetball, and tennis player. After graduating from University of Buffalo's School of Pharmacy, Arthur became a well respected pharmacist for more than 35 years.
Arthur is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Betsy Comisar. His children remember him with love and gratitude: David (Ellen) Comisar, Melanie (David) Abkowitz, Cantor Jonathan Comisar, Craig (Anne) Hoffman, Andrew Hoffman (Tracy Worker). Art's 11 grandchildren were a joyful blessing in his life: Chandler Hoffman, Madison Hoffman, Yonah Abkowitz, Katie Hoffman, Rebecca Comisar, Sara Hoffman, Matthew Hoffman, Nicole Comisar, Talia Abkowitz, Bonnie Comisar, and Ryan Hoffman. The birth of his great grandson, Arthur Hoffman, brought him enormous pride.
Arthur is also survived by his nephews Daniel Comisar, Peter Comisar, niece Rachel Steib, and his sister-in-law Barbara Comisar- all who recall him with affection He had a close relationship with his sister-in-law and brother-in- law Audrey and Fred Hoffman. Art and Betsy counted many dear friends among their circle, and they will dearly miss him.
Our hearts are filled with gratitude for Arthur's primary caregiver over the last 14 months, Tammy Kelly. She brought him enormous comfort as she shepherded him through the last chapter of his life. Many thanks also to his kind caregiver Denise Harrison. Much appreciation for the support of the Sancerre community in Palm Coast, FL
For more than 30 years, Arthur enjoyed welcoming family and friends to his summer home in Eastham, MA (Cape Cod). The simple joys of life satisfied Art and made him smile: a delicious meal, an afternoon nap, walking on the beach, working in his yard, having a schvitz with his buddies at the JCC, striking up conversations with anyone he met,-– but above all, having his family around him, close- knowing they were happy and healthy.
