He was my cousin on my dad's side ....via Rasmussen to Bert Gunn -von Schlobohm
Once upon a long time ago I visited him in 1984 asking his advice on my new business in buying & refurbishing AT&T Northern Telecom & other leading telacom equipment : I asked him for advice & an investment.... ....he said to me if your business idea us great you will find it generates money on it's own merits: come back in a year from now & let's talk about it....I returned 14 months later & proudly told him I no longer needed a loan .....in 18 months my business gave me a net worth of >$1m & debit free !
Thank you "uncle Artie" jr

My mother was Art Nielsen, Sr's first personal secretary. She told me the story of how she got the job. He had interviewed scores of women, but she got the job when she completed 16 pages of dictation in shorthand with only one error - she had written "a" instead of "an." He hired her on the spot.

She worked tirelessly for him for four years, even traveling to Florida with him and Gertrude on their summer vacation.

He and his wife Gertrude made her feel like a member of his real family; they invited my mother, my two sisters, and me to Chicago to stay with them for three days. I still remember their huge, beautiful house with all of the bedrooms. I almost got lost! One Christmas Gertrude sent us 3 intricately decorated egg shells to hang on our Christmas tree.

After 4 years of working for Art Sr., my mother later joined the Women's Marine Corps when the U.S. became involved in WWII. She didn't want to hurt his feelings by quitting because she was so exhausted and thought that the only reason he would accept for her quitting was if she joined the war effort. She stayed in touch with Art and Gertrude for the rest of their lives and visited Gertrude in Chicago. Years later, he gave her financial assistance to put my older sister through college since my mother had been raising three girls completely on her own. He even had one of his beautiful German Shephard's puppies driven from Chicago to our little town in Iowa because he knew how much I loved animals.

When Artie returned from the war, he asked my mother to move us to Chicago to help his son run the company. For some reason, she turned down his offer and kept us in Iowa.

I got to know "Artie," as my mother fondly called him, many years later when I lived in Chicago. He was as kind and gracious to me as his father had been to my mother. I'll never forget attending a party at his house where Rosemary Clooney made an impassioned speech for women's rights. She complimented me on the purple sweater I was wearing and asked me where I had bought it. She was truly "larger than life." He and Patty also had me to their house for Christmas dinner. He was so proud of his children and spoke with such respect for Patricia.

What a gentle and humble soul he was! In my conversations with him through the years, I was always so amazed at his curiousity about everything. He always wanted to know what I was doing and, when I became a H.S. teacher, was eager to have talks about education. Even when I talked with him by phone from Phoenix just a few years ago and learned that he had Parkinson's Disease, I could still sense his intellectual energy and his love of life. We reminisced about his father and my mom and his dear departed wife Patty.

He truly did the Nielsen name proud by carrying on his mother and father's philanthropic work. I think Gertrude was such a great innovater when she set up a child-care center at the Nielsen Company. Art Sr. and Art Jr. and their wives truly had rich, meaningful lives!

My memories of my mother are closely intertwined with those of the Nielsen family. I have so much admiration for the Nielsen family.

To the Arthur C.Nielsen Jr.

Deeply sorry for great loss of such a talented person like Mr.Nielsen.
I though it is so awesome to have people reconize ones name. The Nielsen rating was a very helpful way to gage family viewing of t.v.
I know he will missed and loved by all who knew and love him.

Art Nielsen joined the Museum of Broadcast Communications as our Founding Chairman in 1984 and gave us a credibility that was important to our early growth. His personal support at crucial moments saved the museum on many occasions. It is sad that he will miss the Grand Opening of the National Radio Hall of Fame Gallery one month from today. On a personal note, Art was a mentor to me and someone who had a remarkable recall of historic moments in broadcasting. My lunch with Art and William Paley in 1988 is a special moment that I will always cherish.

To the Nielsen family, my sister Lisa, Art and Chris, you have my deepest heartfelt sympathy. Your dad was one of the greatest men I've ever known. Not just in business but in life. I've personally known him for over 42 years because my mom (Katherine) worked for the family. I and my children were always treated like part of the family. He wasn't just a wonderful father and tennis player but also a great photographer. He has celebrated many important events with us over the many years. Always had the cutest stories to tell everytime I was with him. I shall remember him with a smile because that's how he always greeted me. I know you will miss him and so will the world. He was a real pioneer and a generous soul. Mr. Nielsen will live on in our hearts forever. Lisa you know I love you to death and if there is anything I can do to help you through this time of sorry please let me know. Keep the faith! And remember that God doesn't make mistakes. And I'm sure your dad is in a better place now.

Sincerely,

Doris

Back in late January, 1956, I was hired at A.C.Nielsen Co. My position, assistant secretary to the V.P, William Sweigert. (TV marketing.) His office was right next to Mr. Nielsen, Sr. and the new kid on the block, Art. Jr. I did tons of work, taking dictation sitting in on meetings, for both Father and Son and loved my job. My younger sister worked there for a while, as did a young man in the Charting Department, who became my husband in early 1959. Even his (Joe's) Mom worked there also for a bit. IBM was just across the street and Art Sr. and Jr. both appreciated the closeness. Your family loss is our's also. Our sincere condolences and thank you's go out for the wonderful memories they gave us. Sincerely, Joy (Taylor) and Joe Jaeger.
