Arthur (Art) was born April 10, 1931, on a farm five miles south of
Sutton, NE to Reinhold and Elizabeth (Bott) Scheierman. Art was baptized in the Evangelical United Brethren Church on June 28, 1931, and confirmed on May 15, 1944.
Art attended rural school district #79 in Clay County and graduated from Sutton High School in the class of 1948. He excelled in the FFA program and was president of the local chapter during 1947-48. In May 1951, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country for four years during the Korean conflict. In 1955, Art began his farming career until his retirement in 1996.
Art was united in marriage to Carol Joyce Mekelburg on November 30, 1963, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Fort Morgan, Colorado. This union was blessed with four children: Scott, Renee, Kristi and Darla. Art and Carol were dedicated and active members of the Zion Lutheran Church in
Sutton, NE and served in several church positions. Art was also a member of the American Legion Argonne Post #61. He served on numerous boards, including South Central Public Power District Board, Electric Generation Transmission Coop Board, Clay County Mutual Insurance Board and the Sutton School Board, to name a few.
Left to treasure his memory are his wife of 62 years Carol; children Scott (Shannon) Scheierman of Aurora, NE; Renee (Brad) Mason of Beloit, KS; Kristi (David) Murray of
Krum, TX; Darla (Steve) Thompson of
McCook, NE; Grandchildren: Jama, Jasa, Baylor, Masa and Booker Scheierman; Brendon and Bryce Mason; Hattie (Luke), Madeline (David) and Bridger Murray; Sydney, Hannah and Abigail Thompson; and great-grand daughters Haisley and Everly; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents Reinhold and Elizabeth, sisters Ruth Scheierman and Gertrude Monson, brother-in-law Marlow Monson, niece Kay Monson and grandson David Murray III.
His great love and enthusiasm was noted in his love for his family. He supported his children, thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren by attending as many of their activities and important life events, especially sports, band, FFA, 4-H and dance. His telltale hoot of "whoo, whoo" ensured his loved ones that he was present and cheering for them.
Thank you to the Henderson Health Care Services, especially Dr. James Ohrt and staff, Sutton Community Home staff and Tabitha Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care.
