Arthur Sherman – Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Arthur Sherman, MD (aka Devabodhi). He passed peacefully on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
Art was a gentle soft soul, who was brilliant. He lived in both the worlds of science and spirituality. He loved his books as much as he loved nature and the natural world. He loved hiking and camping, with a great love for Acadia National Park and the Canadian Rockies. He trekked the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal some years ago. He loved classical music as he equally loved folk music. He played both the guitar and banjo. He found joy in his beloved Yankees and the New York Giants, not to mention the pleasure he derived from his "wonder dog", Sky. He had an intense connection to theater, and was a superb actor both in Community Theater and off-Broadway. He became a talented woodworker (self-taught) who built much of the furniture in his Woodstock home. We cannot forget to mention his total immersion and expertise in doing the New York Times crossword puzzles. He was a "Renaissance Man".
As a friend shared, "His great wisdom was always wrapped in a profound humility that to me was always a sure sign and shining expression of his awakened heart". He had a beautiful loving heart, and a witty and hilarious sense of humor. Another close friend describes him as totally non-judgmental, caring and always willing to help both emotionally and physically.
He was also a family man. He and his wife, Ritambhara, would regularly hike and walk together, and sit together in meditation. He loved his time with his daughter, Rebecca, often in deep conversation about science, the world and spirituality. He equally loved watching sports and going to Yankee stadium with his son, Jeremy and daughter-in-law Carol. He was so proud of his granddaughter, Madison, who is an extraordinarily skilled fashion designer. Lastly, he would love to cuddle his two year old granddaughter, Haeva, and sing to her.
Art maintained a private practice in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in both Kingston and Woodstock, New York for over 40 years. His work with patients was always deep and genuine and heart-felt. He loved his work; he loved working with people to heal their wounds and deepen their essential selves. He was a healer in the true sense of the word.
He was also on his own spiritual Journey. As a follower of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, he lived in India for 3 years. He then moved to Woodstock, New York to be a part of the spiritual community there.
In recent years, he was deeply connected to the non-dual teachings of Rupert Spira, Adyashanti and Eckhardt Tolle. He was grateful, again, to be connected with two wonderful spiritual communities. These groups, and the people in them, brought him great joy.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie (aka Ritambhara); his daughter Rebecca; his son, Jeremy; his daughter-in-law, Carol; his granddaughters Madison and Haeva; his two nieces, Melanie and Paula.
He was deeply loved.
