Arthur Small Obituary

Published by Legacy from Jun. 16 to Jun. 23, 2023.
Arthur Polhill Small, III passed away at home on Thursday June 15, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was born to the late Arthur and Hazel Small on December 20, 1945, in Jacksonville, Florida. He graduated from Ribault High School in 1963 and attended Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, North Carolina where he played baseball for the great Coach Joe Ferebee. After a short term in the U.S. Army Reserve, he began a distinguished career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1969 under J. Edgar Hoover. His career took him to Philadelphia and New York City before returning home to Jacksonville in 1977. He retired in 2002 after 33 years with the FBI.
He met the love of his life Marjorie (Mike) Beaufort on a blind date in 1970 and they were married a year later. They celebrated 50 years of marriage shortly before Mike's passing in 2021.
Art had a love for fishing and spent many hours trying to catch "the big one" off his backyard dock. He was known for his infectious humor and had a joke for every occasion. He loved baseball and most of all the Atlanta Braves and would travel to see them play any time he could. He appreciated the simple things in life like a good ballgame, a cold beer, and "plain" food, always better when enjoyed with family and friends.
Art has been reunited in heaven with Mike and infant son Samuel, his mother, father and sister Rachel Lee. He is survived by his sons Art IV and Beau (Julie) and granddaughters Kate and Allie, and many cherished members of his extended family. The family is thankful for his loving neighbors and longtime friend, Billy Wynne, for their care and kindness over the last several years.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Riverside Presbyterian Church, 849 Park Street Jacksonville, Florida 32210. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Art Small III may be made to the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch or a Cancer Research charity of your choice.

A fine fellow who aspired to be a polo piney trainer at the FBI in Nanhattan.

I used to see Art when we were both out walking in the mornings. Then I had some health problems and that, plus fear of the pandemic, haulted my walks for about three years. I recently resumed them, but one of the big things I noticed was Art´s absence. I feared the worst, and a little research led me to find that the worst was true. Rest in peace, Art. I barely knew you, but enough to know you were a good guy.

My condolences ,to Beau, Four , and all the extended family. May God Bless you during this sorrowful time.

Art and I had been friends since we were in 6th grade when we began playing baseball for The Ribault Lions Club. Later we both played several years on our high school baseball team. After we both finished college we ended up working a year together at state probation in Jacksonville before he began his career at the FBI. Art came back to Jacksonville in 1977 about a year after I had transferred with Federal Probation to Orlando and later Tampa. We remained friends and were in each others weddings. Later when I retired Art was there for my golf tournament and dinner. About 18 months later I was at his retirement function.

Art was a great friend! He was by all definition , a jokester, much like his Dad, and almost as corny. My favorite silly moment about Art was my first out of town trip with him and two other guys to Art's uncle's fishing camp in either N. Georgia or S. Alabama??? He called it "Camp Falstaff". Before leaving for the trip Art took a sheet of paper and divided it up into smaller pieces and handed out 3-4 to each of us. On each he had written "pee ticket". His idea was that you didn't need to interrupt if you needed to go, just cash in your ticket and the driver, Art, would stop at the nearest appropriate place. It worked and I must admit, I used the same tactic with family and friend over the years.

Art was a great man! His Love of Family was something I always admired. He was also a very good athlete and a great teammate. He could hit a baseball a country mile.

Artie will be greatly missed by many. He always made everyone feel welcome. I feel quite sure he was welcomed when he cleared those Pearly Gates.

As children, Artie and grew up together in close proximity as neighbors in Lake Forest Manor. He was one of those unique and quality individuals we tend to remember and cherish the friendship throughout our entire life. The world shall now contain a void; but, we know he is at peace. May God give strength and peace to those family members and friends who will miss him so very much.

This is heartbreaking. I grew up with Art in Lake Forest. Our families were members of Epperson Methodist Church. I have many fond memories of spending time with him and his wonderful family. He was such a good guy and always a gentleman. sending prayers to his family & friends.

We were best friends in elementary school, both serving on the Boy Patrol together (i.e., crossing guards) -- and classmates at Ribault HS. The world has lost a good guy.
