Arthur Curtis Thompson Sr., 95, of Benton, passed away peacefully with family by his side on October 19, 2025. He was born on June 8, 1930, the son of Albert and Ruth Thompson of Benton, Maine.
He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel Thompson; his sons, Mike Thompson, Arthur
Thompson Jr., and Herbert Thompson; and his sisters, Flotie Thompson, Dolores Simpson, and Lois DeRaps.
Arthur is survived by his son, Edward Thompson of Waterville; his daughters-in-law, Sharon Thompson of Benton and Janet Thompson Bard of Fairfield Center; and his grandsons, Scott Thompson and wife Rachel of Clinton, and Justin Thompson of Augusta. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Michelle Thompson and partner Ryan of Stetson, Mindy Servello and husband Sergio of Pepperell, Massachusetts, and Brittany Olivares and husband Hugo of Oakland. Arthur was a proud great-grandfather to three whom he adored: Cora Thompson, Luca Servello, and Gael Olivares.
Arthur was a father figure to many, especially to David Soule of Clinton, who lovingly referred to him as his "fifth son."
A proud Mason for more than fifty years, Arthur was a devoted member of Sebasticook Lodge #146 in Clinton, where he served as Grand Master several times and remained active for many years. He was also a dedicated member of the Kora
Shriners Hospital in Lewiston. Arthur worked for The Hatchery in Winslow, Maine, for 27 years as the floorman of the chick room and building maintenance lead, managing incubation operations. He later worked at the Goodwill-Hinckley Farm in Hinckley for several years, up well before sunrise to care for livestock, maintain the property, and mentor students. He especially cherished the time spent there working alongside his son, Arthur Jr. Over the years, he also worked at Spring Brook Ice and Fuel, Silver Street Service Station, Cianbro, and Cypress Minerals, and was self-employed for many years as a carpenter.
Arthur faithfully served the Town of Benton part-time for more than 50 years, maintaining cemeteries, flagging roads, and assisting with general town upkeep. Over the decades, he worked alongside several road commissioners and especially treasured his time with his long-time friend, Albert Giroux. He proudly continued flagging until the age of 94 and took great pride in his independence, continuing to drive until that same age. As you can tell, he kept himself busy. For more than 30 years, Arthur could be found every morning at Governor's Restaurant, enjoying coffee and conversation. He could often be found alongside his close friend, Bob Morissette, buying tractors from all over the state.
Above all, Arthur's family was his world. He had countless memories with his oldest son, Mike, hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling; working alongside Arthur Jr. at Goodwill-Hinckley Farm; and supporting Edward and Herbert in the garage fixing up cars. He spoke often of his marriage to Hazel, always noting that in all their years together, they only ever had one argument - though Edward raised an eyebrow at that. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren - celebrating their accomplishments, watching them play,
sharing their stories and photos with anyone who would listen and collecting stacks of books for them anywhere he could find them.
Arthur was always ready to tell a story in his thick Maine accent, his contagious smile lighting up every room. Tough as stone yet endlessly kind, he was known for his giving heart and willingness to help anyone in need - often giving the shirt off his back without a second thought. He faced life's hardships with quiet strength and perseverance, never one to complain. Arthur took many young men under his wing and was always there when someone needed a hand, helping simply because that's who he was expecting nothing in return.
Please join us for a celebration of Arthur's life at Governor's Restaurant in Waterville on Saturday, November 8 at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Light of Arthur Foundation, a nonprofit created to continue his legacy by supporting Maine children in need.
