Arthur D. Wellman, age 79, of Mokena, Illinois, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026.
Arthur was born on August 4, 1947, and grew up in Oak Park, Illinois. He lived a life defined by service, strength, intelligence, and kindness. Throughout his life, Arthur gave of himself freely, dedicating his time and talents to his country, his family, and those around him.
Arthur proudly served in the United States Army for 30 years, from 1975 until his retirement in 2005 as a Colonel. As a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps, he devoted his military career to law, leadership, and justice. During his years of service, Arthur held important overseas assignments connected to the Iraq War serving at Camp Victory in Bagdad, Iraq and also served during the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s, including the Bosnian War.
Following his military retirement, Arthur continued his work in the legal field. He graduated from Valparaiso University School of Law and later worked for Chicago Title and Trust. Even after retiring, Arthur never stopped helping others. He was always willing to offer advice, lend a hand, or share his knowledge with anyone in need. His deeply kind heart and quiet generosity left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Arthur was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Anne Wellman, née Madden.
He is survived by his loving son, Arthur Ryne Wellman, and by his cherished granddaughter, Savona Lisa Wellman. Some of Arthur's happiest moments were spent with Savona, whether they were taking nature walks, playing catch, or simply enjoying time together.
Arthur also found great joy in cheering on the Chicago Cubs, taking fishing trips into Canada, and spending time with his fraternity brothers in Florida. More than anything, he will be remembered as a man who treated everyone with kindness and whose life was marked by humility, service, and love.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
