Arturo Garcia Castillo, affectionately also known as Tury, Art, and our Dad/Papi/Pa, lived such a beautiful life worthy of a novel/book/movie.
Arturo was born on July 5th, 1954 in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico to parents Amada Castillo and Adolfo Garcia. As a child he lived between El Paso/Juarez and Los Angeles, later choosing El Paso as his home where he built his family. Arturo was a devoted husband to Nelly Garcia, the love of his life, and the most loving and silly father to Arturo Enriquez Garcia, Christina Garcia, Jacqueline Garcia, and Veronica Navarette and the most nurturing grandpa to Aiyana Ballesteros, Oliver and Penelope Navarette, Sophia Crosby, Milagros Cristina Briones.
Our Dad was the definition of a good and hard working man, a profound believer in God that was dedicated to giving it his all always. Arturo attended Jefferson and Burges High School where he participated in ROTC and wrestling. He pursued a career as an electrical technician, moving his way up to industrial electrician and maestro where he worked both in El Paso and Juarez maquilas. He helped many local print shops, recycle plants, farms (pecan and cotton). He led projects in Puerto Rico, Nica Minerals, Chihuahua city, Silver City, Alamogordo and more. A true self made man, worked from the ground up with little help or handouts he worked hard for everything and taught those around him that there was a special love in appreciating what you work so hard for, always saying “it makes you tougher” and flexing his muscles with a big smile.
Despite juggling work, training, and his mothers declining health, he always made time for his family. Always reminding those around to not be so serious and enjoy life even when it’s hard to breathe. Our Dad was a great story teller, always taking advantage of any opportunity to share a story, a lesson, a laugh, a hug, always “killing people with kindness”. He was a man of integrity, kindness, immense generosity and has left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Arturo built his family on the principle of becoming the dad he always wished for and didn't have and he truly exceeded everyone's expectations because he really was the coolest dad we know. Arturo loved to love! He loved talking about music, history, science and of course anything to do with electricity. Our dad loved God, he was devoted in his beliefs and taught us how to pray, how to be faithful in our faith, especially now more than ever. Dad taught us how to figure things out, to ask questions, to work hard and chew gum enjoy life! Dad taught us to appreciate life even when there wasn't much money for vacations, we would go on hikes, to the parks, long cruises, and flee markets, always reminding us how rich we were to have each other! My dad taught us to always value people, family, love, friendships over any monetary value, teaching us what loyalty was and that no house, job, or dollar bill was worth more than any person we love and care for! He taught us to forgive others and own up to our flaws, helping us grow and be better, trusting in God to help us carry the load if we couldn’t.
Dad was a true big fish, even in his departure he was extraordinary. “A man tells his story so many times, he becomes the stories... they live on after him and in that way he becomes immortal…”
We find comfort in knowing how blessed we were to have shared so much of him in this life and how rich we were to have his love as our father, our teacher, our north star, and so much more. We will honor his legacy through his stories that will continue to live on through us and the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever.
