Ascanio "Scan" DeCamillo

I had the privilege of working with Scan on an involved bearing project back in the 2002 timeframe. The guy was a friggin' encyclopedia about bearings - I was astounded by his knowledge. Ever since then, whenever i ran into him at the Turbo Show (which was pretty much every year), he always greeted me with a warm smile and handshake, and we would have a pleasant chat. This is incredibly sad news - My heart goes out to his family and many friends.

Scan was a great friend and I miss him so much. I greatly enjoyed teaching with him for many years at the ROMAC short courses on rotor dynamics at the University of Virginia. It was a special time when Marcia accompanied Scan to Charlottesville and my wife Theresa and I went out to dinner with them. I always looked forward to seeing him at the Texas A&M Turbosymposium. Attached a photo of Rich Armentrout and myself with Scan in Charlottesville. Those were good times.

Scan was one of the warmest people I've ever known and he had a smile that could light up a room. He was one of those rare professionals that was comfortable with presenting not just the neat and tidy, but also the occasional scatter plot of data that was the messy reality. I know that I will be looking for him at the next conference just out of habit. I will miss Scan. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

What do you say about someone that you met in first grade and went through high school together? Little kids can be mean to one another but never Scan;
he was always smart and goodhearted. I'm very sad to hear of his passing. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

My sincere condolences to Scan's family. Seeing and talking to Scan (he was always quick to smile and had a joke) about the industry and everything else was always a highlight of any professional setting. He was a great engineer and an even better person. I will miss Scan greatly.

I can't remember a time I didn't know Scan, as his friendships with Marcia, Dan & Sue were so natural & full that my 5-year-old eyes saw him as an extension of family. His pure joy & crinkly-eyed grin are stamped on my heart, even as it breaks for my sister and his girls & siblings. Share your stories about him-they'll make everyone smile the way he could! I met this dear friend first during a visit to Kingsbury in 2000/2001.He made me feel at home during the technical discussions.Then later in the seminar in 2006 in Potiers in France. We bearing lovers will miss ''THIS GREAT MAN'' not only for his professional expertise but mostly for the witty jokes which poured out endlessly , My deepest condolences to his wife,children and grand children; May the lord help them to withstand this terrible shock. We lost a very special person in our lives. Scan was the most wonderful, thoughtful, caring, and funny person! We are fortunate to have so many beautiful memories! He cared deeply and selflessly for everyone but had a special place in his heart for all of his grandkids! He always made each one of them feel like the most important person in the world!

Scan and my mom were high school sweethearts who reconnected after many years and have been blissfully happy ever since. He had such a powerful and positive impact on so many.

Scan, I often think of the time during high school when we hung out a lot. And every time I do there is a cheer in my heart that has never abated. I often wondered what you were up to, but life being what it is we never crossed paths. Nonetheless, I felt absolute assurance that the vibrant, thoughtful funny musical teen who was my buddy had grown into a fully mature version of that fantastic kid. Love to your family. From a professional point of view, we are losing a extraordinary engineer, an expert of tilting pad bearings; from every meeting and every discussion, we learned new information and get more experience in this domain. It was a great pleasure to wrote several chapters of the Encyclopedia of Tribology with Scan and our two other friends, Waldek and Azzedine! I will never forget the excellent times during STLE Annual Meetings, like the nice lunch shared with Waldek in New-York, in 2003 (photo).

We lost a great man and a great engineer. Scan will be greatly missed by the industry! My deepest condolences to Scan's family. He will not be forgotten by many of us who worked with him. I learned so much from him, I consider myself his student. RIP Scan!
