Asuncion Celaya Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Eternity Funeral Home on Nov. 18, 2025.
Asuncion "Chon" Mongarro Celaya
March 25, 1946 – August 1, 2025
Asuncion "Chon" Mongarro Celaya, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away
peacefully on August 1, 2025, in Odessa, Texas. Born and raised in Fort Stockton, Texas, Chon
was a pillar of his family and community, known for his warm heart, infectious smile, and
unwavering generosity.
Chon lived in Odessa for almost 30 years, where he continued to embody the spirit of kindness
and connection that defined his life. He was the cherished brother of Nasario Celaya (Nieves),
Margarita Celaya, and Lucia Scott, and the loving uncle to many nieces and nephews who
adored him.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Eternity Funeral Home, beginning with
a private family viewing from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by public viewing from 11 a.m. to 8
p.m. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
Chon was born on March 25, 1946, to Pedro and Margarita Celaya in Fort Stockton, Texas. He
completed his GED and dedicated nearly 20 years working for a linen service company,
followed by another 20 years as Sporting Goods manager at Wal-Mart. Through his hard work
and humility, Chon earned the respect and love of those who knew him.
More than anything, Chon was a lover of life's simple pleasures - fishing, camping, cooking,
gardening, and most of all, spending time with family and friends. He was always ready for a
family cookout, often the first to bring watermelon to the kids during the summer. Known for
never meeting a stranger, his laughter and smile could light up any room. His compassion and
generosity knew no bounds, and he was often the glue that held the family together, the trusted
keeper of family stories and current events.
Chon was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Margarita Celaya, and his siblings Camilo
Celaya, Gonzalo Celaya, Ramon Celaya, Lucas Celaya, Paz Celaya, Emilio Celaya, Juliana
Escareno, Canuta Dominguez, Lupe Gonzales, and Petra Celaya.
Following cremation, a Memorial Mass will be held on August 14, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady
of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Fort Stockton, Texas, followed by a graveside service at St.
Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. A meal will be shared afterward at the church, celebrating the life
and legacy of a truly special man.
Arrangements are entrusted to Eternity Funeral Home.
Chon's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him-a man who gave without asking,
who loved deeply, and who forever will be remembered as the family historian and beloved soul
whose light never fades.
