August F. "Gus" Brock

Albuquerque, NM

August Frank (Gus) Brock, 89 passed away peacefully on Saturday December 6, 2025, at his home in Albuquerque, NM. He was born on January 13,1936 in Cawker City, KS to Frank Brock and Elizabeth Brock.

Gus Brock was affectionately known by most as "Coach Brock", he spent his career spanning over 60 years, as a teacher, coach and athletic administrator for youth. He completed his education with a BS in Biology while playing quarterback at Ft. Hays Kansas State University (1959) and an MS Biology from Emporia State University (1965). Over his career, he taught primarily high school Sciences and Physical Education. In 1960, he began his football coaching career in Kansas (Otis HS), and continued at Missouri (Monett HS, Miller HS), New Mexico (Menaul HS, Zuni HS) and Arizona (Window Rock HS). In his spare time, he volunteered to coach Mighty Mite (1st-6th grade) football in Missouri for many years. He also coached track and field and was known throughout NM as an expert in coordinating track meets which, well into his 80's, he volunteered to operate events at the NM Senior Olympics, Santa Fe Indian School and NMAA State Track and Field Championship.

Honors included coaching the 1989 NM All Star Football team (Classes AAAA-A), organizing and coaching the 1991 NM All Star Football game (AA-A), taking the Menaul Panthers to the 1991 New Mexico State AA Football Championship. In 1991 he was inducted as an Albuquerque Hall of Fame High School Coach. Undoubtedly, he mentored, coached, instructed, encouraged and supported hundreds of young people over many decades.

He treasured time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren and often loved to joke around in his dry humor way. He was an avid gardener known for making homemade pickles, canned vegetables, jellies, jams, baked goods and all manner of delicious meals. Last but not least, he was a loyal KC Chiefs fan.

Gus is survived by his wife Bernice and his children David Brock (Kelly), Dan Byram (Aimee), Jenny Hawes (Dave), Charles Knox (Cheryl), Maria Brock (Scott) and Eric Brock (Kat); 22 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Mary Ann Davis (Jerry), Fran Paxton (Jack), John Brock (Cathleen), Norma Jean Munsch, Kathy Blau (Mike), Doris Tompkins (Mark); sister-in-law Pat Brock; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

I enjoyed delivering food to Gus. He reminded me of my own grandfather. I also loved Gus's accent. It reminded me of the narrator in the 1973 children's movie "Charlotte's Web. "
