His already large family has expended with thirty-six grandchildren, eighty-six great grandchildren, and seventeen great-great grandchildren. His hobbies included reading, gardening, and watching western TV shows. He also enjoys spending time with his brother Jules Hurst. Mr. Hurst celebrated his one hundredth (100th) birthday with a Catholic Mass and a large banquet surrounded by family and friends. He received numerous awards for his military service, his dedication to reading and gardening as well as a Letter of Proclamation from Pointe Coupee Parish awarding his one hundred (100th) birthday as August Hurst Day in the Parish.
