August Phillip (Phil) Ryan

August Phillip (Phil) Ryan of Midland, Texas passed away at 6:53 a.m. on September 12, 2024, at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital-Westover Hills in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on March 16, 1942, to Augustus Phillip Ryan and Cora Pauline Stevens Ryan. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Wilma Woody Crabtree and husband George Crabtree, his brother Joe Ryan and wife Jennie, and his sister Patricia Ryan Budka and husband Cpl. David Budka.
Phil was raised in Pecos, Texas where he met and married Mary Anne Strachan on September 9, 1960. They had two sons, Jeff and Bart Ryan. Following an illness, Mary Anne passed away on August 12,1969, at age 28. On May 25, 1973, Phil married Margaret Paschal, and they had two children, Penny and Kevin Ryan.
Phil was an active member of the Pecos community where he was a volunteer for the Pecos Fire Department and coached youth sports. He was employed by the Texas Highway Department in Pecos, Texas. The family relocated to Midland, Texas in 1977 so Phil could pursue a lifelong career in the oil & gas industry with the Texas Oil Company, Texaco. He was transferred to Denver, Colorado in 1989, and then transferred back to Midland, Texas in 1997. Phil retired from Texaco as a petroleum engineer in 2002.
Sports were Phil's hobby. For thirty years, Phil officiated high school and college football and basketball. He was supervisor of officials for High School Permian Basin and supervisor of officials for two college conferences. He coached Pony League baseball teams, youth baseball teams, and youth football and basketball teams. Phil was the head coach of two Pony League baseball teams that advanced to the World Series – the Pecos Texas Pony League All-Stars in 1971 playing in Pennsylvania and the Parker Colorado Cubs in 1993 playing in Ohio.
Phil's favorite retirement activities were consulting, attending horse races, and playing golf at every opportunity. He was an avid supporter of the Texas Longhorns. Phil is survived by his wife, Margaret Ryan, children, Jeff Ryan and wife Sheryl, Bart Ryan and wife Amye, Penny Stevenson and husband Tony, Kevin Ryan and wife Dulce, 12 grandchildren, Matt Jordan and wife Lauryn, Chad Jordan and wife Alexa, Avrie Ryan, Colten Ryan, Cassidy Ryan, Brayton McNally and husband Jonathan, Shae Stevenson and fiancé Gage Jackson, Austin Bond and wife Reilly, Lili Belle Hertzberg and fiancé Joe Santistevan, Sterling Ryan, Aryia Ryan, Amelia Ryan, 6 great grandchildren, Connor Jordan, Vera Jordan, John Anderson Jordan, Harlow Jordan, Hallie Jordan, Oliver Santistevan, and nephews, nieces, cousins, and a multitude of friends.
Graveside services will be at Mount Evergreen Cemetery, off of Shaw Road in Pecos, Texas, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025. A reception will follow at Pecos Valley Country Club at 80 Starley Dr, Pecos, Texas. Services are in care of Pecos Funeral Home in Pecos, Texas.
