Mr. Avery Lee Poteate, 83, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. He was born in Haywood County, NC on July 15, 1941 to the late Edwin Poteate and Louise Pinnix Poteate. After graduating from Yadkinville High School in 1960, he served as a United States Marine from 1960 until 1964. Avery retired as a mechanic for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after more than 30 years. He traveled all across the world for RJR training other mechanics. Aside from his work travels, he thoroughly enjoyed traveling with his family. His favorite places to visit were the Outer Banks of NC and St. Augustine, Florida. Avery was an avid flounder fishman. He enjoyed bowling and even participated in many leagues. He began his life living in Yadkinville, NC, but after coming home from the Marine Corp he moved to Winston-Salem for many years, then after retiring he moved to Holden Beach. Avery was a life long learner and always solved any problem he faced. He had such a generous heart and always took care of those he loved. Avery will be deeply missed by those who had the special privilege to know him.
He is survived by his “daughter”, Rae (Steve) Hurley; grandchildren, Nicholas (Yureli) Mello, Sierra (Michael) Head, and Cheyenne Hurley; sister, Patty P. Choplin; brothers, Eddy (Frances) Poteate and Joe (Cathe) Poteat; nieces and nephews, Brent (Drama) Choplin, Julia (Eddie) Norman, Kelly (Pete) Fellows, Billy Poteate, Will Poteat, and Joy (Chad) Gadberry; close family friend, Paul East; and several other dear family members.
A celebration of life service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at Yadkinville United Methodist Church with Avery’s sister, Rev. Patty Choplin officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the United States Marine Corp and the local VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
