Avril Mae Simpson nee Barnes affectionately known as Sis Mae, Auntie Mae, Mae Mae and Sis Simpson was born on September 4th, 1937 In Hartlands District, St. Catherine, Jamaica to Caleb and Mabel Barnes. She was the 5th of 11 children, with 5 of her siblings preceding her in death. She grew up partially in St Catherine,then with an Aunt Nurse MacDonald in Portland, Jamaica. She attended Hartlands Primary School then transferring to Barracks Primary School in Spanish Town, St Catherine. She attended and graduated from Titchfield High School in Portland, Jamaica.
She worked as a pottery maker at Pottery Ceramics in Twickenham Park, St Catherine, Jamaica while pursuing her love of dressmaking and sewing. She later pursued dressmaking and sewing fulltime making school uniforms for the neighborhood children, work wear for the working professionals and clothing for church and other events. She was exceptional at crafting the finest outfits and was often complimented for her impeccable sewing skills.
She met Leoplold Simpson in November 1965 whom she later marry. She produced 4 children Sheavon, Shelton, Delgado and Tanya.
She migrated to the United States In 1983. She worked as a Nanny/Caretaker to the Peller family until she obtained a job with North Jersey Developmental Center where she worked until her retirement. During retirement she entered the field of childcare, babysitting many of the neighborhood children as well as her younger nieces and nephews.
Sis May was an active member of the Church of God of Prophecy serving as Sunday School Superintendent where she organized "God's Little helpers" program and summer church picnics in the park. She was a dedicated and faithful member of the church always willing and able to serve in any capacity she could. She loved god with all her heart and would often sing in church and around the house.
She had a natural talent for cooking, often trying out new meals. She was happy preparing food for family and guest. She was always able to whip something up when there is virtually nothing in the cupboards.
Mom was a kind, caring and generous person always willing to help. She would give her last, just to help someone in need. She offered encouragement to anyone who needed it. She was a gentle, quiet soul preferring to keep the peace at all times. She was hardworking and courageous. She would often say " never give up, keep going." She was a dedicated and devoted mother and wife. Her children and husband meant everything to her, she was fiercely protective of them. Mom made sure that her children were never lacking and would go above and beyond to make sure their needs were met.
Mom you will surely be missed. You ran the race of life well never complaining even when diseases and illness consumed your body. Rest well in heavenly peace!
Proverbs 31 vs 28-29 states "Her children rise up and called her blessed, her husband also, and he praises her. Many women have done excellently but you surpass them all."
