Barbara Barrell Obituary
Published by Legacy on Nov. 20, 2025.
Barbara "Barbie" Jo Barrell, born on September 15, 1954, in Rochester, NY, passed away peacefully in Fort Myers, FL, on November 18, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was 71 years old.
Barb was the cherished daughter of Keith and Josephine (Merman) Amish and grew up in a household filled with love and joy. Her early experiences in Rochester shaped her into the remarkable woman she would become-a dedicated teacher, a loving mother, and a cherished friend.
She earned her Master of Arts in Education, a degree that opened the door to a fulfilling career that spanned over 30 years. As an educator, Barbie was passionate about imparting knowledge and nurturing young minds, impacting countless students and their families throughout her career. Her commitment to education and her students was a testament to her profound belief in the power of learning.
Beyond her impressive career, Barbara was a devoted mother to her son, James (Brittany) Barrell III of Monroe, GA, and her daughter, Lisa (Eric) Armbruster of Hernando, MS. She took immense pride in her role as a grandmother to her beloved grandchildren: Harper, Loxleigh, Rhett, Stetson, and Harlow. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and her face would light up with joy at the mere mention of their names.
Barbie was not just a mother and educator; she was also a passionate hobbyist. She delighted in raising monarch butterflies, glass making, and practicing yoga. Cooking was another of her passions, and her family will fondly remember the warmth of her kitchen, filled with delicious aromas and the laughter of loved ones gathered around her table.
In recent years, Barb faced a brave battle with cervical cancer, a journey marked by courage and strength. Diagnosed at the age of 68, she fought the illness with the same grace and determination that characterized her life. She wished to remind all women of the importance of regular PAP smears, sharing her own experience following the advice to stop after 65. Her commitment to health awareness extended beyond her own life, as she encouraged everyone to donate blood and support those in need.
Barb's strength in the face of adversity was awe-inspiring, and she fought her battle with what her loved ones affectionately called "Barb-like" class. Her family unanimously agrees that they are better people for having known her, and they understand the world was much better off with her presence. She selflessly invested in others, continually uplifting those around her.
Barbara is survived by her loving husband, James Barrell Jr., of Fort Myers, FL, and her adoring children and grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward her legacy of kindness, love, and perseverance. She also leaves behind numerous friends and family members who cherished her spirit and the light she brought into their lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Barb's memory to the Gladiolus Food Pantry or Florida Monarch Research, PO Box 174, Fort Ogden, FL 34267.
