KERNERSVILLE – Barbara Susanna Haines Cowell, 83, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, December 16, 2023. Her greatest passions included serving her Lord, being with her family, and working with children.
“Nana,” as she was lovingly called by her close family, was born November 9, 1940, in Waynesburg, PA, the daughter of the late Edith Pauline Lemley Haines and Leslie W. Haines. She graduated from Waynesburg High School in 1958 and, subsequently, West Virginia University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She devoted her life to education and loved working with children and their families. Her 42 year teaching career began in Uniontown, PA in 1961 and ended at Reno Elementary School in 2003. She was honored for her tremendous service throughout her career, receiving multiple awards for excellence in teaching.
In 2008, she and her husband moved to Kernersville near High Point, NC, where her daughter Lori and son Michael and their families resided. Being near her children and grandchildren has been a blessing and brought her immeasurable joy.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Gary Cowell; son, Michael Cowell and his wife, Angela, of Raleigh, NC; granddaughter, Jessica Rowell Kessler and husband, Stephen, of Pasadena, MD; granddaughter, Brittany Dickinson Chen and husband, Steven, of Charlotte, NC; and grandson, Adam Dickinson of Durham, NC; grandsons, Anderson Cowell and Miles Cowell of Raleigh, NC; two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Paula Cowell Rowell and Lori Cowell Dickinson, her brother, James Haines, and her parents, Edith and Leslie Haines.
Funeral services will be held on 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Rev. Chuck Ireson. Interment will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00-10:50 AM at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent Wounded Warrior Project (https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org) or H.O.P.E of Winston Salem (https://hopews.org/ways-to-help/donate).
