Barbara Ann Heussmann, 83, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2025, at home. She was born on November 29, 1942, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Kenneth and Ruth Boyum Thompson. She was the youngest of five girls and grew up on a farm near Dell Rapids, South Dakota.
She was a resident of Dell Rapids, South Dakota and was a 1960 graduate of Dell Rapids High School. She was married to Lewis Heussmann on October 27, 1984, in Aurora, Colorado. She worked as an assembler of medical equipment, working her way up to supervisor for a company in Boulder, Colorado, displaying wonderful problem-solving skills. She retired from Valley Lab in 1996.
After moving to Oak Harbor, Washington in 2001, she volunteered delivering meals for the Meals On Wheels program. She eventually became the manager of the kitchen in Oak Harbor, Washington and served there for 16 years. Barbara was very outgoing and enjoyed being with people. Her family and her Norwegian heritage were very important to her. Barbara always had the ability to make anyone smile.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis; two older sisters, June Bindel and her husband Marvin, of Libby Montana and Carmen Kirk of Loveland, Colorado. She is also survived by her daughter Ruth and husband Ron, of Centennial, Colorado; grandsons Gunnar and Garret Dickey and several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her son Wade Bindel, from a previous marriage, and two sisters Karen Thompson and Janet Fiegen.
She was a member of the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church and also attended Church On The Rock in Oak Harbor.
As per her request she did not want a memorial service but wanted friends and family to remember her as she was in life.
