She was a 1947 graduate of Nashua High School, and a 1953 graduate of Nashua Business College. As a young woman, she worked at Sterling Drugstore, Hathaway Bakery and Indian Head Bank. While raising her children, she was a devoted homemaker and worked as a lunch monitor at Mount Pleasant School. After her children were grown, she worked in Patient Accounts at St Joseph Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1996.

Barbara had been an active, longtime, member of the First Baptist Church of Nashua since 1951.
