Barbara Marie Mack, age 87, entered into eternal rest to be with the Lord, on October 22, 2024, at Bridgeport Hospital. She was lovingly surrounded by her family. Barbara was the oldest of six children born to the late Charles H. Helms Sr., and Adeline D. Helms, in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Barbara was educated in the Bridgeport school system. In 1988 she received her LPN nursing degree from St. Vincent's School of Nursing. In 1989 she was employed at the Greater Bridgeport Mental Health Center for 16 years until her retirement in 2005.
Barbara was first married to the late Frank J. Langston and from the union they had five children. Later in life she married the late Deacon Leroy Mack Jr., and they had two children. Barbara was predeceased by her mother, father, sister Mamie Helms, sister Grace Breeden; brothers, Charles (JuJu) Helms Jr., and Archie H. Helms, and her son Wayne(PeeWee) Langstoneand grandsons Gregory Langston, Wayne Langston and a great grandson, Kyree Kennedy.
To know Barbara is to love her. She had a warm and giving spirit. At the young age of 13 she became a caregiver to her mother who had a chronic heart condition. Barbara was such a caring, compassionate person, if she saw someone in need, she was right there offering to help. Over the years she has cared for and nursed many family members and friends. She was also very athletic following her older brother Archie. This athletic side was passed on to her who played various sports. Barbara was also an avid card player, her favorite games were Pinochle and 500 Rummy. She would play 500 Rummy with her kids and grandkids and talk junk while playing all while winning! With her family she enjoyed board games especially Scrabble and Pokeno. Cooking was her passion, her 3 layer chocolate cake would leave you drooling and asking for more! Not to mention, her Mac & Cheese mmm!
Barbara joined First Baptist Church in 1970, and has been faithfully active in several ministries: Diaconate, Missionaries, Culinary, Inspirational & Senior Choirs, and the Historical Ministry. She was honored as a Jewel recipient in 2012 and 2017 the A. Marie Long Recipient. Barbara loved her church family.
Barbara leaves to cherish her memory, her three sons, Frank C. Langston, Troy Mack (Georgia), Torrey Mack, Three daughters, Cynthia L. Nesmith (Bernard), Donna M. Langston and Pamela D. Langston. A sister Madeline Broadwater (Frank), sister-in-law, Rebecca Helms, Genevieve Helms and Shirley Mack and brother-in-law, Theodore Mack. Twenty-two grandchildren, forty-one great grandchildren and nine great-great grand-children! (WHO CAN ALL SAY THAT'S OUR NANA!) A host of nieces nephews, cousins and friends.
