Barbara Siler Martin, 93, of Kernersville, NC, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025.
Born and raised in Randolph County, Barbara was the beloved daughter of Will Siler and Myrtle Coble, who affectionately called her Bobbie. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Martin; three sons, Stevie, Stanley, and Henry; a daughter, Beverly; her brother, Lloyd Siler; and her sister, Dorothy Lee Siler.
At around 19 years old, Barbara left North Carolina and spent many years living in New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. In the summer of 1966, she returned home to North Carolina by train, bringing herself and her seven children back to the place where her heart had always remained.
Barbara attended Randolph County Schools and later retired from Forsyth County Schools, where she served faithfully as a crossing guard. She loved the children she helped protect each day, and they loved her just as dearly. Barbara was also proud to have been the first Black employee at Laughlin's Hosiery Mills, a reflection of her courage, work ethic, and determination.
A woman of deep faith, Barbara loved reading her Bible and praying for others. Her favorite color was pink, as will be lovingly reflected in her funeral attire and casket. She strongly disliked the color red and never hesitated to let people know. She cherished her children and grandchildren above all else.
Barbara also loved to play cards, a pastime she enjoyed her entire life and continued even in her later years. Whether it was Bid Wiz, Spades, or 5000, she played with skill, humor, and a competitive spirit that brought joy and laughter to her family and friends.
She leaves to treasure her memory: sons Lawrence Siler, Daniel Laughlin of the home, Kenneth Laughlin (Teressa), Michael Laughlin (Sandra); and daughter Marie Laughlin of the home. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren, along with a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Barbara loved her church family deeply. For many years, her home church was The Crossing Church in Kernersville, under Pastor Pete, where she worshiped faithfully. When she first joined, it was known as First Christian Church, and she took great pride and joy in being part of its spiritual community.
She was well respected and deeply loved in the communities of Kernersville, Randleman, and within St. Peter United Methodist Church. She had a passion for baseball, and her favorite team, the Atlanta Braves, brought her endless joy.
To her children and their friends, she was Mom or Momma. To others, she was Ms. Barbara. And to her extended family and loved ones, she was Bobbie, Big Bobbie, Aunt Bobbie, or simply Barbara. Whatever name she answered to, she was cherished.
Her life was one of faith, resilience, family, and love. Her memory will remain a blessing and inspiration to all who knew her.
