Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carthage Chapel - Jacksonville on Jul. 19, 2024.
Barbara Jean Orton was born in
Jacksonville, Florida, as the eighth child of Samuel Mitchell Sr., and Alma Mitchell. Her parents, her sister, Leonteen Miley, and brothers, Andrew J. (AJ) Mitchell and Jimmy Lee Mitchell, preceded her in death.
Barbara received her education in the public schools of Duval County. She graduated from Stanton High School, Class of 1961. She received her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse and additional advanced course work in nursing. Barbara was employed at University Hospital (Shands) in
Jacksonville, Florida, as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse for premature and sick babies and as a Triage Nurse during her tenure until 1984. She then went on to extend her career in Indiana and then briefly in Oklahoma. She was also a graduate of Rhema Bible College.
Barbara received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at eight years old and was baptized. Barbara was an active member of her local church over the course of her life in
Jacksonville, Florida, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Barbara served her local church body as a choir member, deaconess, and church nurse. She funded several Christian Ministries around the world through her giving locally and internationally for the building and uplifting of the Kingdom of God as a disciple of Christ.
Barbara authored the book and the cover art for "Through God's Eyes." Barbara's book has touched the lives of those who have read it and inspired them to pursue a deeper and more intimate relationship with Father God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Barbara's life demonstrated the outfitting of the whole armor of God having received a report of a terminal illness in 1975 with three young children. Having done all to stand, Barbara stood firm on the promises of God for healing, for strength, for provision, and for mercy and grace. The anointing of the Lord could be seen and felt on Barbara by those to whom it was revealed.
"Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit sayeth the Lord of hosts"
Zach 4:6, KJV
