Barbara Scoon Obituary
Barbara Ruth Scoon was born on October 25, 1932, to George and Dorothy Boorn in Elyria, Ohio. She spent her childhood at the family's farmhouse on Lorain Road with her younger sister Phyllis. She joined her family in God's embrace on January 3, 2024.
Education was an important tenet of her family, and she took that foundation into teaching after graduating from Ridgeville High School and then Baldwin-Wallace College. During her college years, she was a member of Kappa Phi and the Order of Eastern Star. After college, Barbara primarily taught 2nd and 3rd grade and especially enjoyed focusing on reading with her students. She spent her entire career teaching in the Elyria School District, retiring after 30 years of service. In the late 1970's she would pursue and complete her Masters in Education as a full time working single mother, a testament to her tenacity and dedication. After retirement, she enjoyed meeting up with her teacher friends monthly, staying active in Delta Kappa Gamma; a professional society for female educators, and would often tutor neighborhood kids.
In 1956, she welcomed her first child, Ruth and in 1964, Robert was born. Her parenting focused on the importance of learning, traveling, hard work and the Methodist creed of "do all the good you can, for all the people you can, in all the ways you can, as long as you ever can". During summer breaks, Barbara, Ruth, and Robert would join her parents in their treasured Air Stream trailer to see as much of the country as possible. Barbara visited every state in her lifetime along with taking cherished trips to Europe, the Caribbean and South America. After retirement, she would often travel to Knoxville, TN, to spend the winter months with her sister, Phyllis, and her family.
Music enriched Barbara's life starting with learning piano in college, attending the Bach Festival at B-W, becoming a season ticket holder to her beloved Cleveland Orchestra. She prided herself on passing that love of music to her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Berea since 1955 and enjoyed participating in Homebuilders, Women's Circle, TheoQuest and the Missions Commission. Faith was a cornerstone of her life.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Ruth Bachman (William) and son Robert (Maureen) along with her grandchildren William III (Heather), Geoffrey, Bethany, and Kristine Bradley (Eric). She was thrilled to become a great-grandmother to George, Theodore, and William IV. She was a loving bonus Grandma Barb to Madelin, Alexandria, Macauly, Ripley and Willow. Her family will have a memorial service on Saturday February 3rd at 11am at the United Methodist Church of Berea (170 Seminary St, Berea, OH 44017). In lieu of flowers, Barbara requested any donations or gifts to be directed to the church.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life". John 3:16.
