Barbara Siman Strouse Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 18 to Feb. 21, 2023.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Siman Strouse on February 16, 2023.

Barbara trained under George Balanchine, joined The Radio City Music Hall Ballet, starred in The Pajama Game (in summer stock, opposite Frank Langella), and performed in numerous Broadway musicals - including the original Broadway production of My Fair Lady (even dancing with Julie Andrews on The Ed Sullivan show). In 1964, she married composer Charles Strouse, and turned her professional talents to choreographing and directing. Her choreography included the official Rodgers and Hammerstein musical revue, Some Enchanted Evening, at The Kennedy Center, and the direction of A Lot of Living starring Linda Lavin. Her international productions include Sara Brightman in Nightingale at England's Buxton Opera, and the musicals Mayor and By Strouse. Touring productions included 42nd Street, My Fair Lady, Peter Pan, Annie, and The Music Man. With her son, William Strouse, she conceived and choreographed STOLEN, a series of provocative vignettes linked by the idea of something stolen.

Beloved wife of Charles Strouse. Loving mother of Benjamin (Ronni), Nicholas, Victoria (Jeff) and William (Erin). Cherished GM of Arthur, Samuel, Navah, Owen, Vivian, Teddy, West and Ever. Sister of the late Shirley Grant, Flora Hausman and David Siman. Lovingly cared for by Aneta Wazna and Sharon Treasure Wallace.

My condolences to all of Barbara's family. I knew some of you when I took care of Benjamin and Nicholas.
I remember Barbara's kindness, concern, and generosity.
Over the years I have realized how much I learned from her just by how she treated everyone, how she was somehow there for the people in her life.
My prayers are with you all; I know she is in a good and loving place.

It seems like only yesterday - but in 1982! Barbara was also the music contractor for the 4th national tour of "Annie". I interviewed with her for the assistant conductor role which launched my Broadway show touring career.

Dear Charles, I send you my deep concolences for the loss of beautiful Barbara. So many times Arthur and I sat just behind you in the theater at Tony shows. We always greeted each other warmly. You probably know I'm now a widow so I haven't been to one of those shows in a very long time, but I remember those evenings so well. I hope you find comfort with your family, and that you'll have some happiness this spring and summer. Fondest greetings, Leslie Garis Kopit
