Barbara Swartz, 92, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2026. She was born on September 13, 1933 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Arthur and Miriam Johnson.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her loving husband, Allen “Buz” Michael Swartz, Sr.; her son, Allen Michael “Mike” Swartz, Jr. and two brothers.

Mrs. Swartz earned a BS in Health Education from Slippery Rock University in 1956. She met the love of her life, Buz, at Virginia Beach and it was love at first sight. They were married on June 15, 1957. Together they built a life in Durham, NC and raised three children whom they loved dearly.

Barbara was an avid reader and enjoyed volunteering at the Main Durham Library Branch for many years. She was active in many brunch and lunch clubs where she shared her wonderful laugh and enjoyed socializing with her friends. She was a dog, chocolate, and wine lover who appreciated life’s simple pleasures.

Mrs. Swartz was an expert in needlepoint, active in the American Needlepoint Guild for many years, and was proud to have once made ornaments for the White House Christmas tree.

Barbara enjoyed family gatherings and holidays, especially a Thanksgiving spent on the North Carolina coast. As a reluctant cook, she was still known for her fudge, mashed potatoes, and blue cheese dressing. Her family was so dear to her, and she took every opportunity to spend time with them.

Mrs. Swartz will be remembered as a loving wife, nurturing mother, good listener, and best friend to her grandchildren who was strong-willed and fashionable even in her final days. She will be deeply missed and always remembered.

Barbara is survived by her son, Hank Swartz (Kelly); daughter, Amy Klein; daughter-in-law, Katrina Swartz; grandchildren, Caitlin Swartz, Ealer Swartz (Nathan Payne), Cole Swartz, Colby Cash and Madilyn Klein along with numerous loving family members and friends.

At the request of Mrs. Swartz there will be no services. However, if you wish to, you can make a donation in her memory to the Durham Literacy Center.
