Barbara Lou Kane Waldron, 93, of Manteo passed away unexpectedly October 5,2025 at Outer Banks Hospital soon after a stroke and a fall. She was born on November 20, 1931, in Roanoke, Virginia, the only child of Edward Ezra Kane and Alsiebett Barker Kane.
She grew up in Roanoke, married, and as an only and sometimes lonely child, she wanted a houseful of kids, but alas, that was not to be. In the 1970s she divorced and moved to rural Craig County, Virginia, worked in New Castle, and her little home on the banks of Craig Creek became a gathering place for the many friends who were her family. In 1987 she moved back to Roanoke for a few years, then lived briefly in Nags Head, then Hawaii, New Mexico, California, and Colorado before moving permanently to Manteo in 1999. She worked at several places on the Outer Banks over the years but was most fulfilled by and proud of her last work with Visiting Angels.
She loved both the mountains and the beach, and prior to moving here always tried to come for the Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament in October to cheer on the Sam & Omie's team. She played softball as a young woman and loved many sports. She also loved animals, traveling, gardening, and working in stained glass.
She was predeceased by all her family members and far too many beloved friends. She loved to tease that she would outlive all her younger friends, and she came very close. Still, a goodly number of people who love her dearly, scattered far and wide, are left behind to treasure the memory of her vivacious personality, kindness, generosity, and sense of fun.
There will be no gathering because friends are of advanced age themselves and geographically scattered. Barbara would love for old friends to remember her in their own way whenever and wherever they wish, and in whatever way they wish. On what would have been her 94th birthday, November 20, 2025, would be a great time. She was a generous woman and giving to any charity would honor her.

My memories of Barbara have always been ones of happiness and joy. Having moved to Craig County not knowing anyone, a contact directed me to a restaurant in Salem that offered special gatherings on Fridays. Visiting the restaurant I asked about these special gathers. I was then told to seek out Barbara and Zella at the hardware store in New Castle, so I did.
When I told her why I wanted to see her and the restaurant contact, her first words were: "Well, why don´t you come to the house for dinner" and that was that. Many, many great memories, great new friends and great new adventures. I have truly been blessed as a result of my friendship with Barbara Waldron.

Barbara, to know you was a gift. And I am grateful. You were the cornerstone for a large and lively group of women whose choices were not always accepted by the mainstream. Although I wasn´t around in the early years, your tales and the photos of the Craig´s Creek days made me feel a part of. Leslie and I loved our visits with you in Manteo. You always had a new story or two we hadn´t heard and you would tell them in your wonderful voice. Parties, dinners, luncheons and laughter, lots of laughter. And music everywhere. You were not only the anchor for the group you were the historian too. You are loved and sorely missed.
