Barbara Ward Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel on Mar. 9, 2026.
Barbara Mary Ward of Hull, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children on February 13, 2026 after a long, courageous battle against cancer.

Barbara was born in Newcastle, Delaware on July 3, 1957. The daughter of the late Paul and Mary Jessie (McMahon) Ward of Wilmington. She is survived by her brothers Paul and Geoffrey Ward, sister-in-laws, Ranney, Sandy, Edwina, and brother-in-law Don Allen. Barbara is pre-deceased by her dearly missed siblings Kathleen Best, Elizabeth Allen, and Timmy Ward.

She will be forever missed by her children, Grace and Justin Baker, George and Johanna Werrett, step daughters Kyla, Trista and Amanda; her beloved grandchildren, Alexis, Brayden, Joscelyn and Lucas. She will also be remembered by her nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Barbara attended Saint Anne's grade school and was a graduate of Delcastle Technical High School. A woman of deep faith and service, Barbara was a lifelong registered nurse (R.N.) and devoted herself to healthcare and education; touching countless lives through her work and teaching. Barbara spent most of her career in long-term care nursing and completed her education with a BSN from Chamberlain College later in life. She was revered as a compassionate human, who cared for her patients regardless of race or social rank.

Barbara had a zest for life and looked forward to all of her adventures, cruising the Caribbean islands with her friends, spending summers at the beach, traveling, cooking, dancing, and bicycling, as often as she could. She was an avid reader and storyteller and loved sharing memories of growing up visiting Rehoboth and Dewey Beach. She was proud of where she came from and always saw the best in us. Barbara was a great supporter of the important things in life, OPI "red" nail polish, being sure of yourself, remaining a lifelong learner, and recycling. She was always ready to jump on the back of a motorcycle, take a helicopter ride or ride a horse through the ocean.

The family thanks the Oncology and Pulmonology team at Tufts Medical Center for their unwavering devotion and expertise, as well as Beacon Hospice for extraordinary and compassionate care. We are grateful for all "the extra years."
