Barney Alleman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Services of Iowa at Ankeny Memorial (MSI) on Mar. 1, 2024.
Robert L. (Barney) Alleman was born in Polk County, IA on June 2, 1933 to Ben and Ida (Lehman) Alleman. He died on February 27, 2024 in Waukee, IA.
Visitation will take place at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 5, 2024, with a service following at 11:00, at Lutheran Church of Hope Ankeny (520 NW 36th St). His ashes will be buried at Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Barney grew up in the Alleman area. He attended Ankeny High School, participating in football and basketball. After graduating in 1951, he went to Iowa State College, where he played basketball and football. He met JoAnn Porter on a blind date and they married on June 18, 1955. After his graduation from Iowa State, they moved to Ft. Sill, OK where he served in the Army for two years. Their daughter Linda was born there.
In 1958, they moved to Webster City, IA and he began his career at IMT Insurance Co. as a fieldman. Daughter Teri was born there. In 1972, the family moved to Ankeny, IA when Barney took a job in IMT's home office. He retired from IMT in 1991. His retirement included six years as the head of a county mutual insurance office in Iowa Falls and he drove new cars for Karl Chevrolet for 17 years.
Barney was very active in singing, starting with the Men's Chorus in Webster City and then the Pride of Iowa Barbershop Chorus once he moved to Ankeny. His quartet, Jurassic Larks, was formed in 1997 and in early 1998, on their first try, they won first place in the International Seniors Quartet Championship. He loved this time, when the Larks sang for 12 years, all over the country.
Barney was an avid hunter and fisherman. He took an annual fishing trip to Canada with his Webster City buddies for 42 years. He was also a member of Lutheran Church of Hope Ankeny.
He was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn (Jo) in 2020, his parents, and his two sisters and three brothers.
He is survived by daughters Linda Alleman (Tim Flowers) of West Des Moines, and Teri Sommerlot (Dave) of Ankeny; brother-in-law David Porter (Judy) of Altoona; granddaughters Katy Fukuda (Masaki) of Ankeny, Liv Sommerlot of Berlin, Germany, and Carly Sommerlot of Singapore; and great-granddaughter Sophie Fukuda, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran Church of Hope Ankeny.

Teri and Linda...we were so sad to walk past your dad´s room yesterday and see that his name had been removed from the plaque. We know this is what he wanted...so he is now at peace. It was nice visiting with you both when we would go to visit my mom. Our heartfelt sympathy to you both and your families.
